I wish socialism could work

A high trust flock that has an understanding of building for the future... Stepping stones towards a common goal..
The theory is honestly quite beautiful.
But, this world we find ourselves in is unfortunately an unequal place.
High output humans will never want to share their productivity with the lazy or less fortunate, at least not at scale.
No government will ever be able to legislate equality in the US without tranches of bloodshed/eugenics programs.
The way I see it: Any attempt to implement Socialism is either an honest fools errand, or a devilish hijacking of the cause.

Wouldn't that be more like communism? I agree that if it weren't for human nature communism would be great. But, it is horrible and would never work. (I think the very early Christian "church", during Peter's time could be called communistic, but idk how long that lasted.)
Side note: My grandparents had dealings with the New Llano socialists during the 1930s. Said they had some good carpenters that would barter for food. Granddad called them communists, said they called themselves socialists because they thought it sounded better.
So my ignorance is inherited.

...you have a point though.
Bottom line is that they're both part of the same ideological family. The line between them is blurred in nomenclature these days.

It does okay in Scandinavian countries and the Netherlands.

Maybe because it’s homogenous… or should I say was…

The Netherlands have 2.3% of their population on welfare...the US is 21%.
What are the tax rates to support that 2.3% and the other socialist things? What would they have to be in the US for the same results?

In my experience, these people are actually quite charitable. They know that hard work also requires a bit of good luck and connections.
It's the lazy, low output humans born into wealth who will literally do anything they can to prevent sharing even the smallest portion of their good fortune.

Herein lies the problem

Same as the Ponzi scheme.
But it’ll never work.
Because it can’t.

Where has it truly worked - ever? Many countries have programs that are socialistic, but an entire government and economy focused around socialism has not proven sustainable.

Socialism is against human nature. A person is naturally most concerned with himself and his family. Next comes his friends and neighbors. I don't care about starving children in Mexico. My dog is much more important.
This selfishness is why capitalism works so beautifully. I give the girl money at Starbucks because I want her espresso. She gives me coffee because she wants my money. Mutual selfishness = happiness.

Except that’s a lie. Those countries use a capitalist market economy with a lot of welfare programs. The only way they are able to pay for all of that is a result of capitalism.

In addition, they don’t really pay for military defense. They let us do that, in a way we are subsidizing their socialism.

Even the original pilgrims tried it. It failed miserably. Takers have always and will always take.

Do you know what a hassa is?
It's a pig that don't fly straight. Never underestimate the other guys greed!
The Pilgrims tried it when they first landed. Lasted about 3 years and they almost starved to death. Able bodied men did the work and resented those that didn't at least without any compensation. Once they went back to individual ownership and allowed to keep the fruits of their labor, the colony prospered with surplus of corn and healthier, happier people.
That crap never works.

Never has worked. Idiots keep thinking that it will work this time.

Fat Sexy, there are other countries that meet your utopian criteria. Why don't you move?
Posted on 6/29/26 at 6:20 am to FAT SEXY
I don’t know who said it, but socialism only works until you run out of other people’s money.
At a time and in some countries, high taxes on businesses were an incentive to reinvest into the business that way the business never actually made any money to tax. The businesses were constantly funding expansions because any major profits got taxed pretty substantially so it gave an incentive to grow to avoid income taxes. Now profits go to Wall Street and venture capitalists.
