Lived there from 1986 to 2003, and visit Family every year there. I can confirm, it's a shithole.

I feel your pain. Nashville and the surrounding towns are the same.

Not S'port per se, but I'd live in Blanchard, Mooringsport, Bossier (parts of it anyway), Stonewall, Greenwood, Waskom, etc.

Nope. No way. No how.

I really like good roads, good restaurants, great schools and a myriad of opportunities for economic development.

There is zero of that in those areas, but, you do have good hunting and fishing, so there's that.

seems to me there's a lot of truth to that. Always has been so regarding Shreveport.

My brother lives just up Hwy 1 towards Blanchard and my mom lives in Waskom. To me it seems like they're only about a 15 minute drive from anywhere they need to get to.

Waskom has an excellent golf course and it's cheap as dirt because nobody knows about it. So, don't tell anyone I said this.

It's cheap as dirt because its a fricking goat ranch.

At the time I moved away, I was living in a very good area. Just a mile away from my Dad on Wasson Road (close to the golf club), so I didn't leave because I didn't like where I was living. I left to pursue economic opportunities.

But at the time, I do recall that I liked the Haughton area, which is just outside of Bossier City. Didn't have complete information because I liked where I was and wasn'tconsidering a move locally, but Haughton circa the turn of the century had the look of a pretty good place to live and raise a family.

As far as what's happened with that town in the better part of the past two decades? I wouldn't really know.

Geographically and culturally isolated from where? South Louisiana? While it's true that North Louisiana is much different from South Louisiana, guess what? So is everywhere else on the planet. Being different from South Louisiana doesn't automatically mean that Shreveport/North Louisiana is either isolated or lacking in culture.

I like South Louisiana. I like the people, the food, etc. But North Louisiana is every bit as impressive, just different. I wish I had $20 bucks for every dude from South Louisiana who has said, "Shreveport is nothing but an extension of Texas." Well, maybe they should take a good look at Texas and realize that isn't really the insult they think it is.

I started this thread because I enjoyed growing up in Shreveport, and it sickens me to see what it's turning into. The Shreveport of my youth was a pretty decent place, but I wouldn't move there now. I would live on the outskirts where I was living when I left, but that's as close as I would get.

Not my place to talk about other cities, but we all know that New Orleans has a lot of problems, too. Baton Rouge in the post-Katrina era seems to have deteriorated somewhat, also. I read a little about the potential incorporation of a new town called St. George just outside of Baton Rouge. I don't know that much about it, but apparently a lot of people in the vicinity aren't too happy with where Baton Rouge is trending, either.

Sadly, it isn't just Shreveport. That just happens to be my hometown, and one I visit 3-4 times a year. Hence, the reason for this thread.

No, he'll throw his CAO under the bus or his buddy from Frost. People like him hide from scrutiny, just like he hid from the city council meeting.

I do quite well by sheer luck. The company I work for was bought out 8 years ago by a company that has let us stay in Shreveport/Bossier. All of actual work is for assets that are based in Texas/other states.

My son has six more years of middle/high school. I will advise him to leave the state after college graduation (if he goes in state), and I'll be leaving for Texas after he's done with high school/college.

You are an outsider looking in now, you really don't know this area very well and are clinging to a memory that didn't truly exist. If you actually put in some effort you, and several others in this thread, would realize how wrong you are.

Obviously, I understand. Hate to say it, but Louisianans have made a lot of bad choices at the ballot box over the DECADES, and a lot of those scoundrels only had their own personal and financial gain as their primary goals. As a result, the whole damn state has UNDERACHIEVED like crazy.

It's a shame, too. Good people. Good state. But even though we tend to have a passion for politics, we've elected far too many crooks and scoundrels. It saddens me.

Tell that to all of my friends that still live in Shreveport. They will wholeheartedly disagree. Shreveport is definitely not what it used to be. Not even close. So take your blinders off. I for one actually still hold out hope for my old home town but that hope is fading fast.

Rubensteins Department Store downtown closing the doors was an affirmation of the decay.

About the mid 80s, downtown started dying

You were already proven wrong about the crime issue, do you always double-down on your ignorance or is this just a special case? I guess we should all just ignore the ongoing developments in Shreveport, new restaurants and businesses popping up because you cling to the past you don't really remember that well.

Thats the boat I'm in. Hopefully something will change in the next 5 to 10 years, but I'm not holding my breath.

If Barksdale ever left, Bossier would go the way of Shreveport.
