I Weep For What My Hometown of Shreveport Has Become
I was born and raised in Shreveport, but I moved away after college. I haven't lived there for a little over 20 years now. My Dad still lives just outside of Shreveport, and I pay him a visit every 3-4 months.

Anyway, beginning a few years ago my Dad started telling me that the first 10-15 minutes of local news is usually devoted to talking about the people who were murdered the night before. Frankly, I thought he was exaggerating. But then he called my bluff and suggested that we watch the local news report so I could see that it really was as bad as he said.

Well that was a few years ago, and I quickly learned that he was right. Since that time, we usually catch local news reports when I go there, and I swear IT NEVER FAILS. I took a couple of days off and went in on a Wednesday last week, and the first 10-12 minutes of news was devoted to 3 different murders just the night before. I forget the exact timing, but I think they were reporting about a 4th murder by later that same day.

This isn't the Shreveport I grew up in. And I have to say, both the population and the local leadership have obviously changed from predominantly white to predominantly black. Is that the cause for the incredible increase in violent crime over the past several years? Seems like it to me, because almost every "suspect" I've seen arrested over the past few years has been black.

What's the answer to this problem? I don't know, but I do know that a once-decent town has turned into a 21st century version of the Wild West. As someone who claims Shreveport as my hometown, it's really depressing to see what has happened.

Any thoughts from other residents or former residents of Shreveport?

I feel the same about LaPlace...not as bad as Shreveport but for the size it’s getting there.

Huh? You really have a bad memory then because it used to be a lot worse. The same thugs are in the same shithole neighborhoods doing the same tPOS things, mostly to each other. If you look at the actual numbers, ignore the hyperbole and low-info local journalism, you'd see that the overall trend in te last 20 years is down over 40%.

re: I Weep For What My Hometown of Shreveport Has Become
I could spend an hour answering this question, but I won't. I too grew up in Shreveport and have been away for 30 years. The problem is multi-faceted, but it is not unique to Shreveport.

Shreveport is like a lot of other Southern small-to-medium sized cities. They were always in a precarious position due to racial makeup. Shreveport was about 45% black when I was in high school, and it passed the 50% mark in the early 90s. But it's not just about race.

The modern economy murders cities like Shreveport, which are geographically and culturally isolated. 80% of my graduating class at Captain Shreve left town to live and work. And it wasn't just my class, it was just about every class at every school in town. The city didn't want to invest in its younger generation or in quality of life issues in the 80s and 90s. It didn't know how to attract industry or think outside the box (see failure to land Southwest Airlines when it had the chance). And so it basically sacrificed a couple of generations of producers (educated folks) because it had nothing to offer them, and then was left with an underclass that had no resources, no skills and no opportunity.

That's where we are now. That's also where places like Jackson, Montgomery, Mobile, Macon, and Beaumont are. And the only thing that has prevented Baton Rouge from doing the same thing is LSU. But it's headed the same direction.

I love my hometown. I hope it turns things around, but those hundreds of thousands of people who left aren't coming back.

"omg I turned on the TV and the fake news media got me so scared"

Meanwhile...

There were 59 homicides in 2018, so yes, it's increasing, but as far as I can tell from Jan - March there were 4 homicides in 2019, so are you saying they all happened on the same day when you were there??

The same shite has been going on forever, the news is just making it front and center because fear sells. Buy a gun and protect yourself and stop acting like a pussy getting all riled up.
