I was thinking of buying an EV then I’m hearing the batteries die pretty quick

There has never been a battery that doesn't lose power over time. I'm sure these do as well.
Simply Google a price of a new battery, that's put of warranty.

If their battery is dying out in 3 years, then it's a lemon. Lemons happen in ICE cars as well. Tesla has a really good warranty for 8 years on the battery. I've had a Model 3 since 2018 and the battery is doing really well. I always knew at some point I'd have to get a new battery or sell the car. So far, I don't have to think about it at all. I'm leaning towards buying a new battery when that time comes though as it's a really fun car and super quick. OTA updates all the time keep it with the latest tech/security.

I am by no means a Biden voter or climate change freak. I love ICE cars too. This has been one of my better purchases though. In 8 years I've replaced the tires once and had to replace the 12V battery and also had to do the cabin air filter. No oils changes or fluids or much maintenance at all for EVs. It works great living on an island, i would obviously have another car for road trips if I was on the mainland.

My ex-MIL (the staunch liberal) still drives her 14 yo Prius out in Davis CA, on the original batteries.

Think how much money she's saved over the years.

I bought a cheap, used Tesla Model 3 as a "road trip" car, a car my wife can take when her work is taking her all over the Greater BR area, etc.

It's the funnest, fastest car I've ever driven. I've taken it back and forth to Austin, Houston, Florida, etc. I don't ever want to get out of it. It's like driving a literal space ship.

You should find some other Tesla owners to ask. Even people who absolutely HATE Elon drive them because it's pretty undeniably an incredible car.

Battery replacement is ~$15k. I'm guessing that should keep coming down.

My brother drives a Ford Mustang EV. He hasn't had anything negative to say about it other than it's not optimal for long drives like going on vacation. Great for a commuter car.
