Camps of all types were built and relied upon for many reasons during WWII.

Military camps, work camps for war industries, prison camps, and internment camps.

We treat the internment camps as anathema, but they were a pragmatic solution to a difficult problem. I’m not saying it was the right decision, but I didn’t live through it and am not really in a place to judge.

Right, because of all of the accomplishments of the United States, one of the ones you're most concerned about your children missing, is Japanese internment camps.

GTFO of here with this $hit.

28th downvote. You're a horrible parent. If you even are one.

They were shameful that we did it

But also people are acting like the conditions were Auschwitz-esque

I learned that the U.S. government literally formally apologized for it in 1988 with the Civil Liberties Act, admitting it was motivated by "racial prejudice, wartime hysteria, and a failure of political leadership" and paid out reparations.

And the conditions were pretty on-par with the conditions outside the camps

Well. . .except all your food and utilities were paid for by taxpayers

Wonder how you would react if we treated Japanese Americans the way the Japanese treated literally anyone not Japanese.

I wouldn’t need to be told that. I was alive then. The late 1980’s was when the era of politically motivated apologies began.

I knew you would get downvoted but I do agree with why it had to be done. Today would be another time for it to be required, especially today, since assimilation into American society is no longer required.

The powers want us divided.

Before the guy comes back with Hiroshima and Nagasaki. . .may I add:

quote:

Historians estimate that approximately 14 to 20 million Chinese people died as a result of Japanese military aggression during World War II.

again, that is million

Both nukes, counting after-effects, killed about 200k total

Honey, I know it’s our 40th anniversary, but I think it’s important that we take a moment also to commemorate that time you fricked Ted in accounting in ‘92.

Let’s celebrate the good and the bad.

It's an embarrassing and real mark on our history but I don't see any reason to bring it up in the 250 year celebration

Took the kids to learn about the Japanese internment camps in Idaho today.

Honest question: if we’re celebrating 250 years of American history, why isn’t this part of the 250th anniversary celebration? Seems like it definitely happened and was very American.

Move to Japan then if you don't like it.

My old Japanese friend from Auburn days was quite proud that most Japanese American men were in Japanese warrior societies prior to WWII.

The young men who were interred were ultimately given a choice to join the US Army or be shipped to Japan. It was about a 50/50 split.

The Japanese American troops were sent to Europe. Imagine the surprise for the 10th Mountain Division when they were bailed out by American Japanese troops.
