re: I Love The Government Shutdown. In Fact, I Want Annual Furloughs (No, They Don’t Get Paid)

Shut it down and never reopen it.

I'm willing to give it a shot. Let's stay shutdown for several months and then we can gather data. If key government services truly impact my life then I'll recant (or just bitch about the other services that didn't impact me).
Also, I think Congress has generally included a provision in past spending bills once they finally re-opened the government to provide back pay. In other words, government workers get paid because Congress allows it. For those who are forced to work to retain their position, this is completely fair and is the right thing to do. For those who are not "excepted" from the furloughs, they can suck an egg (although they have been paid in the past).

For pete's sake couldn't Trump wait til after tax season to shut down the government? I'm not getting my tax refund until...America is back open for business!

if you are salaried or hourly, re-do your W-9 and claim more dependents
if you pay quarterly, then you are REALLY doing it wrong and I don't think I can help you

Annual furloughs?
I want all the three letter agencies but DOD shut down and functions moved to the states.

I swear to god, most of you people posting on here have no idea how government works.

I hate that I agree with OweO.
Nobody considers that there would be no passports, no flights, no security if flights were to take place, no national security, ironically no border security, no bankruptcies, no student loans, no repairs to interstates. Just shut it down because bureaucrats are lazy.

I want more furloughs like this one too since I'm getting paid not to work.
Unfortunately skiing in the DC area isn't all that great thanks to temps consistently above freezing. Maybe I'll go see the sights in Richmond. It's a pretty good-sized city but often overlooked. At any rate, I won't be in the office.

How do you save money? The employees will get backup plus overtime to catch up on all of the work they are behind on. It actually costs the government more money.
Nope.
No back pay.
No OT.
My county here in GA has been doing furloughs for a few years and it saves money.

My only major issue is they are going to get back pay when the return to work. We are paying them not to work
That’s why I want furloughs.
They don’t get paid. They don’t get back pay. They don’t get OT when they return. Go home.
We have had mandatory unpaid furlough days here. It’s a good thing and it saves money.

I understand what you’re saying but you don’t understand how furloughs work in the government. You get back pay. It doesn’t work like that in the private sector in most places.
I’m sorry but you are incorrect.
Furlough is not what is happening. Furlough can be and has been unpaid. There were a few ruffled feathers here but they sucked it up. Like I said, it’s not like they were going to quit and go out to the private sector.

I worked in government.
I know what I’m talking about.

Here, because there seems to be a significant lack of understanding by oweo, boogiewoogie1978, warrior poet and others...
Furloughed government employees do not get back pay. Furlough days are not the same as a government shutdown. The government employees in this shutdown will get back pay. They will not in furloughs.
As I said, government employees here in GA, on the state and county levels, have been forced to accept furlough days. They don’t work and they don’t get paid. They don’t get back pay. They don’t get OT when they return. Furloughs have been used to save money when departmental and governments have exceeded or come close to exceeding budgets.
I could tell you a few stories of people I know but I’ll just share an example from the ajc:
And an example from the Northeast Cobb Patch, regarding the county level:
Now, regarding the couple of posters who suggested that I want to cut the pay of police officers, cia agents, FBI agents, military etc...
No. Don’t be silly. Not everyone that works in government is a cop or armed forces member. Exceptions can be made for those in critical positions, just like we do here. For example, when Cobb County mandated furloughs for government workers, exceptions were made for police officers. Likewise, when GA instituted furloughs, exceptions were made for state police officers.
Are we up to speed now?

The Georgia Department of Insurance overspent its budget so much that Commissioner Ralph Hudgens has been forced to lay off staffers and order others to take four unpaid furlough days over the next few months, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has learned.
And an example from the Northeast Cobb Patch, regarding the county level:
quote:
Since May 1, county employees have been forced to take five unpaid days off to help balance the current year's budget.

Then you would know regulations, costs, and procedures were created by the elected officials, not the bureaucrats. Shutdowns are hilariously misplacing anger on the wrong group. Akin to blaming rank and file troops for bloated DOD spending
