The Twain quote applies. Probably 90% of the noise on social media about this is from people who already believe there was an actual invitation.

Does Jill saying that convey a message that should not have been sent? Probably. But, the issue I have is that social and traditional media have framed this as an actual invitation.

If you don’t think semantics matter when they rile up people this much over something this trivial, will it matter when they call January 6 a “coup” or “insurrection”?
