He wants to look like he's treating his wife like an equal and he agrees to something inconsequential to prove it. He wants to sounds more Jewish instead of embracing his own Jewish heritage (I assume he's Jewish based on his comment).
He's not looking to really make a change. He just wants to look like he is.
