We could do a lot better job opening up markets for that food to be sold imo

It's not us.

It's trading partners that we have so called free trading agreements with. Our politicians tell us it's free trade but it is usually free trade one way, from US to the other country.

They tell us it's free trade because the U.S. Chamber of Commerce multinationals tell them to say it's free trade. Their version of free trade is manufacture goods in cheap labor country and sell back to the U.S. In the long term this is unsustainable. We may be the only country in the world that does not protect its manufacturing base. Luckily our land is very productive and food production cannot be shipped overseas. However products made from metals (steel and aluminum) and silicon (chips) are being made in the U.S. less and less due to these one sided free trade agreements that multinational corporations are making trillions off of. This is no longer an issue where we need to protect these industries for economic reasons, but it's getting to the point where this is a national security issue. I mean the concept is simple, we go to war with Russia and we need more steel and aluminum to make ships, tanks, fighter planes, etc. we can't rely on China to provide materials.

Do you think produce is carried across the border on the backs of illegal immigrants, or something?

A huge amount of produce comes from central and South America.

According to google search. 15% of our food is imported. Of which 50% are horticultural (fruits/veggies/tree nuts).

I would imagine most are from central and South America. We get our winter veggies/fruits from South America where it is summer time.

The major crops, Corn/wheat/soy/sugar cane are all domestic for the most part.
