Religious institutions aren't impervious to concepts like self preservation. Alienating gays would make them less culturally relevant. I'm not saying it makes sense but religious institutions have been known to bend the rules to keep people in attendance.

I do think most Christians have an unhealthy obsession with homosexuals though. If it's a sin just like any other why obsess over it as if it's the only thing that matters?

Long story short.
Bad anti Wesley Anglican in the 1700s.
Deists like Jefferson
Then unitarian and the German schools
Then the Briggs trial and Borden Parker Bowne who spent 30 years destroying Protestantism.
After that the liberals and Fosdick ran the show.

Mainline Protestants had a quick post WW2 revival, but the spirit had passed to the fundamentalists like Billy Graham who became evangelicals.

By the 1970s the liberals took control of the battle and finished evicting the traditional Christians in this decade.

It's really interesting.

TLDR
People who don't believe in God took over.

But recently the more liberal churches have been losing members in droves. The more traditional churches are growing.

The Rise of Theological Liberalism and the Decline of American Methodism

Much of that is from this book, it's very eye opening.

Some of it was from the book Bonhoeffer.

I don’t adhere to the Old Testament teachings that would condemn her to Hell. There’s a reason there is a New Testament.

Condemnation to hell isn’t just an Old Testament teaching. Jesus himself said many times the road to heaven is narrow.

Hell is real and we end up in one of two places at the end - heaven or hell. If your “preacher” is an unrepentant sinner leading others astray there is little doubt where she is headed.

A Christian artist made some proclamation about Scripture 12 or so years ago. I sent him a DM and said you won’t be a believer in 10 years. You can now watch him extol the benefits of ayahuasca and mushrooms. Rob Bell was another easy prediction. I’ve got a countdown clock on a couple other fellas.

These ones should just go ahead and call themselves Universalists.

Those who don’t trust the Bible as the infallible word of God and the highest authority for the Church will inevitably make God and His word in their own image and out their personal preferences above God’s holiness. Now do divorced people. It's a sin for a divorced person to get remarried.
Now do sex outside of marriage. How many of you were virgins on your wedding night?

They manipulate scripture to push their evil politics on Earth. Women shouldn't be priest, especially Rainbow flag wearing Lesbians. Evil conmen took over their church to push identity politics and not pay taxes. They are a House of the Devil. Even if you take out the Supernatural part of religion. The entire point of it is to keep society glued together and inspire the people to have children to keep the culture alive.
