Why should they have to? California is a part of this country. They participated in a national election. They bear an equal responsibility as every other state to guarantee that the elections in their state is on the up and up. This is a blatant attempt to avoid meeting that responsibility.

states have rights for STATE ELECTIONS
the voter rolls are state property not federal.
The letter, sent to the secretaries of state of all 50 states and obtained by The Hill, directs states to turn over “publicly-available voter roll data including, if publicly available under the laws of your state, the full first and last names of all registrants, middle names or initials if available, addresses, dates of birth, political party (if recorded in your state), last four digits of social security number if available, [and] voter history from 2006 onward.”

ALL elections in the US are STATE elections. When we elect a POTUS, we have 50 separate state elections and then, AFTER those elections, the EC chooses a POTUS. Generally, states can conduct those elections as they please as long as they follow the 4-5 or so Constitutional mandates (date of election, Amendments 14-15-19-26)

The Constitution gives States the power over voting rules and procedures, subject to Congressional oversight( Supreme Court cases interpretation). The "advisory" commission put together by the Trump Executive branch has no authority and can not compel compliance with the requests.

Is voter registration information confidential?
The voter registration rolls are not available to the general public. However, California law allows certain voter information to be released to a member of the California Legislature or U.S. Congress, to any candidate, to any committee for or against a proposed ballot measure, and to any person for election, scholarly, journalistic, or political purpose, or for governmental purposes. Even in these cases, a few items remain confidential and are never provided to any requestor: your social security number, your driver license number, and your signature.

They seem triggered.

because there are privacy protections that are guaranteed by election commissions

why is that so hard, apparently for righties who extol less government, to understand
A better question is, why does the left resist stopping voter fraud so much?

None of this would be needed to check voter fraud, though, would it? Do you know what information they would need and how they go about the investigation? I don't.

Which states declined?

This would be a golden opportunity to put Trump in his place, but them doing this further gives credence to the allegations of voter fraud.
And they're so guilty, they knowingly accept the consequences of the loss of integrity and confidence. They're handing Trump a second term, on a golden platter.

Trump should send in the military, take over the state governments, and rule as a dictator over the 5 states.

Progressives will feign appreciation for state's rights.

They're actually saying we shouldn't be sharing our personal information with the investigators. These dimwits don't realize that the federal government issues your ssn or that all of that information is on your tax returns!

so you think the IRS just releases our tax returns to investigative agencies without a warrant.
Are tax returns public record?
Individual income tax returns — including those of public figures — are private information, protected by law from unauthorized disclosure. Indeed, the Internal Revenue Service is barred from releasing any taxpayer information whatsoever, except to authorized agencies and individuals.
meaning a legally obtained warrant or subpoena and if you think funding to obtain the tax information for a voter fraud commission is going to pass congress....woah.
If it takes an act of Congress to get a look at Trump's tax returns would you expect less of yours.
might want to edit your post because its you that has some 'realization' to do.

they also have the right to not have their electoral votes counted in federal elections if they will not cooperate with investigations into voting integrity.
It really should be just that simple. Unless they can prove that their voting practices meet certain standards, they get zero representation (house, senate, electoral votes). If not, how do we know that their 'representatives', are legitimate.

They aren't trying to see our tax returns. They want proof that people who voted were eligible to vote in a federal election. I have no problem with that.
