What is gained by their presence, other than some kind of psychological satisfaction for certain people?
They could serve as excellent opportunities to have those conversations that folks don't like having.
Something can't have power over you if you don't allow it to do so.
Use them as points for dialogue and healing.
Hold positive community events around them.
Take students to their locations and unpack history in an authentic way.
The only thing more powerful than anger and hate is total and complete apathy.
Activists have imbued these pieces of stone with far more sinister meanings than they ever originally carried.

How do monuments actually oppress people?
The same way they celebrate heritage and history.

King George in NY? Any regime we helped take down? Come on man, just think about your post for 5 seconds before posting.
So, the removal of a statue of the head of state of a country we were in active rebellion against. I'm asking if there are any similar examples to what we are talking about, ie removal of longstanding statues of historical figures.

That is why they were erected though. Disgruntled losers in the south wanted to remind blacks who was boss.
can the meaning of monuments evolve?
why can't blacks view the statues as a symbol of how far they have come? and a symbol to keep fighting?
the best way to steal power, is to change the meaning of symbols once used against you

Thats not an answer. How do you know that for a fact?

Serbian monuments in Kosovo were meant to remind the Ottomans that despite getting destroyed by the Ottomans, they were still better than Croats.

He's not wrong. Even level headed conservatives concede this truth. It's very clear why these monuments went up when and where they did.

You're comparing singling out a small group with extrapolating actions to a population. Some men are bad, but that doesn't mean you have to stop honoring all men.
That's not what I was doing.
Your rationale for removing the statues is that they make some people feel less.
I'm telling you that many women strongly believe that a patriarchal society has suppressed them.
The logic, therefore, for removing statues of deceased soldiers--that they make some people feel a certain way--could also apply to all statues of men.

not publicly celebrating a cause that was fought with the direct stated intent of keeping black people from rising above their station in general would go a little ways toward promoting racial harmony this country desperately needs?
No it wouldn't. You don't really think it will either.
And I doubt very, very few look at a confederate statue and think that is a symbol of the good ole days when we could own slaves. That's fricking absurd. You dont believe that.

BC Democrat officials think it will and they're the ones with the police power atm in such cities

Let's gauge your ability to accept basic rationale before we go any further. Just because some truths are obvious it's no guarantee you're willing to face facts.
What was the main cause of the civil war, in your understanding of history?

100 or so racist protestors?
I'd say that is pretty far compared to the turn of the century, no?

It's crazy when the oppressive race dictates what other demographics need to do to get over their oppressive history.
I'm not dictating anything. I'm asking you a question.

It's not a current narrative. It's the narrative of when they were built, 60 years after the war.

Yall funny. Show me proof that all these Confederate statues were raised just to remind blacks that they are inferior. Proof
