Basically pick a saint or previous pope that you love, have a strong connection with. I think there is an unwritten rule that they don't pick Peter since he was the first.

This is correct. It's up to the pope. Nobody is gonna tell him no.

The chosen name reflects who the new pontiff wants to emulate, whose legacy he best identifies with.

Leo XIII had significant impact on church doctrine, was pro-workers and 'fair' wages but also, apparently, pro property rights. He also had the 4th longest papacy in recorded history.

This Leo, at 69, could be around for a long time. For better or worse!

We try out some names on our Protestant friends and go with the one that creates the biggest melt.

Pope Leo XIII wrote the Rerum Novarum which basically lined out the church’s stance on worker’s rights and property rights in the context of the Industrial Revolution. It’s a pretty fascinating read, and not very long. You can find free copies via google. Basically, it explained that businesses have a responsibility to workers, and that workers have responsibilities to businesses, their governments, and the church. It positioned the church as being simultaneously against despotism, lassaiz fare capitalism, anarchism, and communism. The document really foreshadows many of the world’s struggles in the 20th century.
