Did you mean to ask "What is a doctor?"

Same way teacher jill became one. What's good for the teacher, is good for the preacher.

The same way Dr. Jill Biden got it.

Edit: OK, you guys beat me by 10 seconds. But on to some real discussion. I knew a lot of priests growing up in the 50s and 60s. None of them called themselves 'Dr.'
But there was noticeable intelligence difference. The Jesuits were way ahead of other orders like Franciscans, Dominicans, Christian Brothers, etc.

Later, in college I encountered my first preacher who called himself 'Dr.' He was a Methodist and he studied religions going back to the Egyptians. I was impressed.

All the rest of the preachers I've met had a very limited knowledge base that I would put on the level of a B.A. from La. Tech.

Honorary Degree’s. I personally wouldn’t call myself doctor if I had that type of degree, but a lot of people do.

Just asking, is it used to sound more worldly or more authoritative?

Should doctorates just be limited to subjects or areas of study that you approve of? Are you familiar with historic folks that were doctors or are you just being willingly ignorant?

Years ago one of our neighbors was an Episcopal priest and had a Th.D from Yale Divinity School. Not really sure that is a howdy doody school though.

Doctor is supposed to be a title of authority. They are an expert in their given field of study. Their opinion on the subject should hold more weight.

In the old days, people with PhD's (any PhD) would often be referred to as "Doctor" because a PhD degree is a "doctorate." It used to be common.

However, the term "doctor" is usually reserved for medical doctors these days. One exception are professors. I know we used to call our professors "Doctor" when addressing them.

Another common exception are university presidents. They are often referred to as "doctor" since almost all of them have PhD's.

However, if you're an engineer with a PhD working a job somewhere, people don't usually go around calling you "doctor" when addressing you.
