House approves $738 billion military bill with money for Trump's Space Force

Posted on 12/11/19 at 11:38 pm
The count in the Democratic-controlled chamber was 377-48, enough to send the legislation on the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, to the Senate, where a vote is expected by the end of next week. Trump has promised to sign the legislation as soon as it passes Congress.
A handful of mostly left-leaning House Democrats opposed the bill because it did not include policy planks including a ban on support for Saudi Arabia’s air campaign in Yemen and a measure barring Trump from using military funds to build a wall on the border with Mexico.

How legit must the need for this Space Force be if all these assholes are for it?
Obviously, that was rhetorical. What I meant to ask was how are these assholes going to exploit this newly created branch to enrich themselves to our detriment?

Can we take just one year off of military spending and relieve the millions being crushed by student loan debt? Just one year is all it would take

Yeah let's just let all our equipment, planes, ships, bases, etc., rot for a year.
Brilliant!

The average student loan is like 30k. These kids probably hav a bigger entertainment budget than they spend on student loans in a year

I could support this if they made student loans illegal after or at least restrict them to kids with 4.0 and above GPAs.
We have too many kids in college right now going after worthless degrees and we needs to trim the fat.

So I should foot the bill for a kid and parents decision to go to school full time and not work at all during the same time to get a Masters in French Lit?

Funny how we never hear bitching from them for having to pay 30 grand for a car that they have six years to pay off yet you can take ten years to pay off that 30 grand student loan.

Why just stupid loan debt? Those are low interest loans and what little interest there is can result in an income tax deduction.
This is literally just the first link that came up in google
quote:
The average student leaves college with about $25,000 in student loan debt. The monthly payment on a $25,000 student loan is approximately $280 (assuming 6.8% interest and a 10-year repayment plan), which can cause financial strain if you’re not prepared for it.
That's less than most vehicle loans by a long shot. And if you have a college degree you should be able to pay off a loan like that pretty quickly assuming no other debts coming out of college.

The best thing in this bill is essentially the elimination of the Feres Doctrine....now military members can sue for medical malpractice.

How about, instead, those being crushed by student loan debt be given the opportunity for debt forgiveness in exchange for a 5 year hitch in the military

What is it with the student loan forgiveness bullshite???
Nobody held a gun to your head to take out the loan, it's your debt, you deal with it. Simple.

Being tone-deaf and saying, "well you little frick just deal with it", isn't going to solve anything.
Does that mean I support student loan forgiveness? Absolutely not. However, serious reforms that address the ballooning cost of education and the education being offered need to be done. I don't think anyone has the balls to do what would make the most sense, though. We will just get the exact same shite with some period of forgiveness, treating the outcome rather than the illness.

While I wholeheartedly agree, step #1 is not taking from person a b and c to cover person e's decision.
It seems every other day it's someone calling for loan forgiveness... I'm sick of hearing it, everytime someone is pandering for something or another one of the first promises out of their mouth is stealing more from me because I didn't make an education choice I now regret or don't feel like honoring my word anymore.

I think it should be like a mortgage, since in many cases the loan amounts are comparable. Instead of tax returns and income statements, you turn in grades and ACT/SAT scores and the college of your choice, from there you may receive up to “x” in loans.
No lender would underwrite a million dollar loan for an elementary teacher. Same rules should apply

as a parent looking at the cost of College for 2...it's down right unfair
25k a year is considered cheap
step across state lines, expect to pay at least 40 a year
this is after tax....
4 year degree on the reasonable side is 100k
my education costs 27k in the late 1980's

App State is pretty reasonable

Screw student loan debtors - UNLESS you are advocating to ELIMINATE loans for worthless degrees, and creating controls on university administrations that create this worthless morass.
Student loans ONLY for qualified academically gifted people in pursuit of a marketable skill who are from an impoverished background not of their own making. And certainly not given to go to the "elite" schools except under extraordinary circumstances = find a cheaper school = let those schools provide their own $$ for those loans and left to their own devices to get repaid.
Screw these "______ studies" curricula.

I come here wanting to read about Space Force and instead I get a shitshow about student loans.
