high fructose corn syrup

Does this flow: price of sugar cane < corn sugar decreases demand for corn for syrup as a sweetener. corn price drops. corn feed price drops. beef price drops? Is the cost of growing corn for syrup vs. feed the same? Would a price drop in corn and beef be sustainable to individually owned corn and beef farmers?
Further, how does this effect the cost of corn for ethanol?
I personally believe that corn should be in cans or cows, not cars and coke.

isn't this bad for you?
Yes it is bad for you. If I can recall the particulars from a class I took a couple semesters ago, the body has multiple pathways which are used to breakdown and process nutrients. White sugar or sucrose is broken down into both glucose and fructose with glucose being metabolized all throughout the body. Fructose on the other hand is metabolized in the liver. When you consume a drink with high fructose corn syrup, the glycolitic pathway in your body is halted because metabolizing the fructose in your liver is the top priority. In short, there are multiple pathways in which your body can process a Coke made with sugar, but only one way for it to process a Coke made with high fructose corn syrup. Also, since it is metabolized in the liver, this triggers a release of insulin.

Yes.
Sucrose (cane sugar) is half glucose and half fructose. Fructose is slightly different molecularity, it's more difficult to metabolize and it is more harmful to your circulatory system (i.e., increase the risk of heart disease). As you get older you should try to limit sugars as much as possible. By the time you are 40 the old food pyramid should be totally inverted. The old food pyramid is totally fine for young active people, especially athletes because they burn the carbs. However as you get older you need to consume more good fats and proteins and stay away from bad carbs like sugar or high fructose corn syrup.

oh no doubt sugar isn't good for you. however on those occasions where i do drink a coke i'd rather have pure sugar in it than that shitty god awful high fructose corn syrup crap.

Agree. Coke with sugar is only half the poison compared to corn syrup.

Is this going to be like the sugar deal that ruins cane farmers in the US?
No. Cane farmers in the US are already getting enormous subsidies. We will just up the subsidies some more or up the subsidies some more.

If there's nothing banning HFCS in beverages then companies are still going to go with it as long as it's cheaper and sales don't suffer.
Unless this deal is just the beginning of changes in the sugar industry (govt mandated % of cane vs beet sugar, the loan system that basically creates a price floor, etc) then this won't change anything.
