So if I start a fake twitter handle and start saying “Hillary’s a crook,” am I in violation of the stautue that the Russians were indicted under?

This seems like it has real life problems for American trolls.

quote:

The indictment says that a Russian organization called the Internet Research Agency sought to wage "information warfare" against the United States by using fictitious American personas and social media platforms and other Internet-based media.

CNBC

Or is the scale of whether the trolling goes viral the determinable factor in bringing said charges against the troll?!?!!

Jesus, I think the FBI has opened a Pandora’s box with these charges. We may all be guilty of this on POLITALK

These indictments are for show. They'll go nowhere.

I'll tell you what I am confused about

The left has told us for years that all people here in the US, whether citizens or foreigners, (here legally or illegally), are protected by the same constitutional rights

so are they not protected by the 1st amendment?...

Does this rule only apply to Russian nationals?

Cause. I mean. We really aren't going to pretend there aren't Mexican nationals doing EXACTLY the same thing, right?

I think I've found our infrastructure bill.

We're gonna need about 3000 new prisons

No. They were literally stealing the identities of Americans so that they could spend money in the U.S. without it being traced back to Russia.

It is legitimate identity theft, not just making a fake profile.

Flesh this out for me.

You mean stealing online identities? Or, you mean identity theft in the sense we normally use it?

Were they charged with identity theft?

Identity theft. They stole the identity of six Americans.

The Russian nationals used the stolen Social Security numbers, home addresses and birth dates of six U.S persons to open bank and PayPal accounts and obtain fake government documents between June 2016 and May 2017, the indictment alleges.

The Russians allegedly opened four accounts at one undisclosed U.S. bank with the stolen identities of four U.S. persons. They also purchased from online sellers more than a dozen bank account numbers spanning five other U.S. banks. The stolen account information was allegedly used to evade PayPal security measures.

The special counsel also announced on Friday that Richard Pinedo of California pleaded guilty to wire fraud for selling bank account numbers to customers that included foreign nationals.

so basically, russian (or any other foreign country) are not allowed to donate to american politics. it is to prevent the monetary influence of those countries. like per se, if china wanted to just give a ten trillion dollars to someone sympathetic to their means.

these russian nationals stole U.S. identities to circumvent these rules, impersonated american citizens and used social media to donate/advertise for Trump to the tune of about 1.2 million dollars per month.

so basically, not only did they steal identities, but contributed monetary ad spends to aid the election of a US politician.

that's what is illegal.

Cool. Actual crimes.

That should be ALL that's included. ACTUAL crimes. Don't even include the other stuff.

From the Indictment:

25. The Federal Election Commission is a federal agency that administers the Federal Election
Campaign Act ("FECA"). Among other things, FECA prohibits foreign nationals from making any
contributions, expenditures, independent expenditures, or disbursements for electioneering
communications.
