That's not really true. There is more nuance to their pronunciation then just "KEEV" - but it sure is some quality virtue signaling.

I Met a guy from Kyiv about ten years ago at Mardi Gras. He wanted to play beer pong with us and my friend told him, “we play for keeps around here!” The guy responded with, “How you know I’m from Keeeeeev? We play for Keeeev!” He was already drunk and hilarious. I was his partner and he wasn’t too bad although they obviously don’t have the elbow rule in Kyiv. The guy harnessed his inner Yao Ming. I hope he’s doing alright. He’s probably whooping some Russian arse in beer pong and drinking their Vodka. So there’s my TLDR for why I say Keev now. I’m not trying to sound pompous. I’m just imitating my drunk Ukrainian beer pong partner.

Old enough to know some shite and I've ALWAYS heard KEY-ev, Ukraine... now all I'm hearing is KEEV.
Ukrainians pronounce it kee-EV. US progs pronounce it Keeev. Really funny hearing US leftists interviewing Ukrainians and asking "How things are in Keeev?" The answer is "In Kiev bla-bla-bla ..."

This same thing happened about 30 years ago when, seemingly overnight, it became cool to pronounce Qatar, “Gutter.”

I also remember it always referred to as The Ukraine. When did it drop “The”

Ukraine is the name of the post-Cold War state, "the Ukraine" was how Russians referred to the region (it means "the borderlands").

Ukraine doesn't want to be referred to as "the Ukraine" as it reminds them of Soviet occupation.

Makes sense. I always assumed it was regional like “the south” or “the west”.
