And it's likely that the Democrats will eventually eschew the radicals in their party as well and return to a more sensible stance on things.

Yes eventually I would think but they are going full blown left first. I don't see this happening anytime soon.

Also, do you think Trump is the closest to a libertarian president that we'll ever get? I'd argue yes.

I hope this is just the beginning of a libertarian renaissance.

If the GOP continues to trend libertarian while the Dems continue to trend communist we might just have a chance to wipe them out.

The leadership in the GWB Republican Party is what we consider the GOP Establishment today. Not good.

Personally, I believe that the moderate Democrats will eventually split from the radical left and let them spin out until they lose interest.

I also see the GOPe continue to fight Trump from the inside until they eventually leave the "New GOP".

At this point, do moderate Dems and the GOPe/Rhinos become a legitimate 3rd party? (Until the radical left dwindles away)

I think we some transformation and we still end up with the left and the right.....maybe just not so far apart.

Given how both sides have rigged the system, easily and then they'll try to wipe out the Libertarians, Greens, every one else.

The most libertarian President we've ever had will always be a tie between Coolidge and Grover Cleveland.

I've said for a while now that Trump is basically a 1930s democrat with some similarities to JFK.

I’m a Trumpist and DJT is the first Republican I ever voted for in my life after a decade of being a down the ticket Democrat.

Maybe the closest we’ll get, but he’s not very libertarian, IMO. He is just over correcting for neocon bullshite for now. The tax cuts and deregulation and shite are pretty libertarian, but what about his military spending, tariffs(although I’d argue reciprocal trade and using tariffs to keep China honest enables and empowers more market forces), immigration stance(although I’d argue eliminating a black market for labor enables and empowers more market forces), and possibly infrastructure plan(although I’d argue that reliable infrastructure with a variety of options enables and empowers more market forces)?

Trump isn’t really a libertarian, but I think he’s shown plenty of libertarians that their Econ 101 mindset was silly.

tell me how the parties have changed? Trump brought in new blood to the republican party . otherwise it's still the same tired ideas 20yrs later. The tea party movement now has mud on it's face due to the lack of fiscal responsibility that they have voted for since Trump's election. Trump wining the presidency just proved that the evangelicals are full of moral bullshite. Trump isn't a libertarian and there is no such thing as a small government Republican. They campaign as one the govern like a democrat.

As I discussed in another thread this morning, the trade war is necessary because the rest of the world isn't really participating in "free trade." Tariffs are his tool to level the playing field.

I agree, but the libertarian status quo is not reciprocal trade, like Trump wants. Trump thinks that if you tariffs our cars 15%, then we should match. Libertarians think that if a country taxes our cars 15% you should just shrug it off and lower our tariffs to 0%. Trump thinks that if China is overproducing steel, then that hurts our jobs and industries. He would tariff that steel to keep US industry afloat. Libertarians think you should just shrug it off and consider it "foreign aid".

quote:

Our federal government used to be funded fully by tariffs and excise taxes before the income tax. I think most libertarians would accept that system.

Not if those tariffs cut off markets. The dead wieght loss is far greater.

quote:

The libertarian stance on immigration requires that there not be a welfare state in place that immigrants can exploit. If there is a welfare state in place that immigrants will exploit, then the proper libertarian stance is to limit immigration, both legal and illegal.

Not really. The proper libertarian stance is to continue the status quo. Libertarians wouldn't stand in the way of two private parties, and employer and and employee, entering a mutually agreed contract. Trump wants to choke off this labor market.

quote:

Since not much has come out about that it's hard to comment on it. I'd argue this...I would much prefer that we spend the money here than give it to other countries or spend it fighting wars. Maybe that stance isn't purely libertarian, but it's certainly better than the alternatives.

Libertarians aren't going to support Trump's infrastructure spending.

Trump is as moderate of a president we will probably ever see.

He’s strong conservative on immigration, combating terrorism, judges, fiscal free market policy.

But he leans left on social issues, Trade, labor, and a dove on foreign policy who doesn’t believe in multinational deals (though many Dems have abandoned this)

At best what you will see is for them to portray themselves as Bill Clinton Democrats while running for election, but then still govern as the lefties they are when in power!
