Per the FBI, handguns are used 17.49x more than rifles in homicides (2019 - latest year available). And that's ALL rifles, including bolt rifles, lever rifles, and semi-auto rifles. Your contention is statistically impossible.

Moreover, handguns are overwhelmingly the weapon of choice in suicides.

While I respect your "estimate", it just flies in the face of the reality of homicide in the United States.

Rifles and shotguns just aren't used in ordinary, run-of-the-mill homicides in the United States. Not now. Probably not ever.

Of the approximately 10000 homicides (by firearm) in 2019, less than 600 were categorized as by rifle or shotgun.

"Public health emergency."

Congratulations, America. You've allowed an administration to waltz into control of the country that is absolutely 100% un-American.

They can argue with my trust for them. It’s not a very good listener though.

Something tells me that dudes who get Class 3 licenses, and actually own real assault rifles don't commit too many crimes.

This will be the bill that puts the country loving conservatives over the edge! 2A is super sacred to me and many other traditional Americans.

It may get ugly, but it is what it is!

Every good man needs a good gun!

I’d estimate at least 7-10% of them.

Well.. You'd be wrong.. Actual statics have the numbers around 2%.. And that's all rifles.. So if you tried to pin it down the AR and AK style rifles the numbers probably be be way less than 1%

Class 3 licenses

Not being nit picky but I always think people should be educated about how NFA items work. There’s no such thing as a class 3 license. There’s a FFL and then you can get a class 3 SOT. But this is only for dealers and maybe the most hardcore of collectors. Normal people who want to own class 3 only need the appropriate tax stamp.

steals another term? The dude will have a hard enough time staying alive through this one. The thought of 82 year old Biden running for a second term is just ridiculous. No one that old should be allowed to run for president.

They are missing data from 3200 gun homicides and don’t even have a category for multiple gun homicides.

I just checked my numbers over the last year or so and I’ve got a 4:1 ratio of handguns to rifles for firearm homicides. Other types (i.e. shotgun or handmade) are fairly negligible. My homicide caseload is average for my profession. That’s about the same ratio as I’ve observed working in other areas of the country as well. So being conservative, I think my 7-10% estimate for Chicago is reasonable. Certainly closer to the truth than the previous answers.

Handguns are overwhelmingly the favorite and for good reason. However, it’s crazy to think that criminals haven’t discovered the wonders of relatively inexpensive, high capacity rifles like the AR.

I’m completely against any type of gun control, but pretending like these rifles are never used in the commission of a crime is also ludicrous.

Completely irrelevant to the discussion of homicides.

That's true, yet you're contending that upwards of 1/3 of those involve a rifle when there is no evidence to that effect, and is completely out of line with the known, reported instances, both in 2019 and every prior period.

I'm sorry the aggregate reporting doesn't jibe with your small subset. That doesn't make your own experiences representative of the rest of the country.

You can't legitimately look at the FBI data and conclude that "Yep, 7-10% of homicides via rifle looks about right". At least not with any statistical basis.

I wouldn’t make any conclusions based on fbi data. I gave my estimate based on my own personal experience, you can make your own conclusions for yourself.

I work in a much different region of the US than you, and my personal experience is that even 7% would be way high. I'm mostly arresting perps that have already committed crimes and fled, or assisting local LEO, and I'm not the primary on any local arrests though.

But it's extremely, EXTREMELY rare for us to see a rifle or long gun in the possession of a criminal or used in the commission of a crime.

I don't doubt your personal experiences, I'm merely pointing out how they can differ from officer to officer, region to region. You'd think there would be more rifle/long gun usage in the Southeast where I roam though.
