You have SOF and BCTs confused

quote:

SFABs allow the Army to reduce, over time, the demand for conventional Brigade Combat Teams for combat advising. This will allow BCTs to focus on readiness for warfighting against near-peer threats.

LINK
Conventional units have been doing this type of advising for the past 15 years. Hell I did it. SOF never has and never will have anything to do with the level of advising.

LINK

This is another link that explains it a little further and shows the absurdity of the notion that SFAB is an attempt at breaking up a monopoly. SF has been dealing with foreign special operations communities, once again not at the level of SFAB will do and what BCT have been doing.

Brother, I don’t come in talking about doing kinetic operations with SEALS. I am no special operator. Just relying on over thirty five years (and counting) worth of (now) senior military experience.

Read ATP 3-05.2. The dynamic is changing.

You are the one who said SFAB is the first attempt at degrading the special operations monopoly. That is what this discussion is about. You can’t give a shred of evidence to that because SFAB is a dedicated force to a mission that conventional forces have been doing for the past 15 years. You’ve posted something on a message board that posters will take as gold coming from a Col but it’s wrong and all I did was point it out. So now you are shooting for the superiority angle. I know how to be wrong, with all your years of experience you should know too.

All you are doing is demonstrating your level of understanding is rooted in the present day military. Nothing more or less than that. Congrats.

This is pointless. keep backpeddling as you wish, 1+1 will never equal 3 though. Would like to see the face on any Soldier (enlisted/officer alike, regardless of rank) who spent time in a BCT or on an ODA if someone told them that SFAB is the first attempt to breakup the special ops “monopoly”.

Only equal in a Jarheads mind.

The marines corps should be disbanded.
It doesn't have a function that the Army doesn't already fill.

The crazy thing about this is that one of the strongest traditions of the teams (pre-Marchinko's rise, even), is a willingness among their officers to say, "No, sir. That's crazy. Respectfully request to very quickly offer you a better tactical option" to stupid orders.

You demonstrate a grasp of the current situation. Congrats. What have we historically done in regards to foreign internal defense? Who conducted their training?

ETA: Do you seriously not understand the DOTMLPF-P process? TAA? POM? Do they not teach this in the most rudimentary sense in NCOES?

NCOES, as I understand it, is woefully short on big picture items. The focus is on skills, collective training and, occasionally tactics (if combat arms). They expect NCOs to pick up on policy stuff OTJ. There may be a little bit at the E-8 and E-9 schools, but I'm just not sure.

I've been at the CGSOC level so long, I can't say definitively what goes on at the NCO schools any longer.

Once again, our conversation was rooted in your statement that SFAB is the first attempt at breaking up the Special Ops monopoly, nothing more, nothing less. It’s an unequivocally false statement. As General Milley and SMA Dailey have repeatedly expressed, and what majority of the Army knows to be true,, it’s a force restructure allowing our BCT’s to focus on direct action because we’ve been doing too much advise and assist missions.

What you are now doing is attempting to direct the conversation to a position that allows you to feel substantiated in your absurbed claim when in reality it’s completely irrelevant to your initial statement. It still doesn’t hold weight because name the last time SF has advised at this strategic level?..........

And like yourself, I wouldn’t know the details of NCOES.

It's 2017. We shouldn't have an active Army or Air Force.

Lol it doesn't matter what year it is, the founders never intended for us to have large standing army.

Well then you are unlike me, because I do know NCOES. Served as an enlisted for seven years and graduated from (then) PLDC and BNCOC (11B) prior to becoming an officer. I would hope your OES talks about this in the most rudimentary sense. And again, you (as expected) demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of who has had the foreign internal defense mission from their inception. The advise and assist (a mission) and the SFAB (structure) acknowledge the importance of building partner capability (a traditional role of SOF when conducting FID). We are now trying for middle ground to see if a unit of (relatively) senior leaders can do this mission as a force structure (we are struggling to fill the ranks, but you would know that from all your expertise). Anyway, keep hammering away at your point about you have proven me wrong. If nothing else it kept me entertained during my tour of the UN headquarters today.

Nope. Milley specifically addressed SOF being freed up by SFAB OPS . Given that the scope of SOF advise and assist, SFA, and FID missions is rivaled only by the Iranian IRGC, it is a near impossibility that SFAB won't impact the current SOF mission set.

I Personally like the SFAB concept and have repeatedly called for a unit like this. But 500 soldiers in the SFAB isn't enough to make a big dent in that mission.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

quote:

SOF has been dealing with foreign SOF and Foreign conventional forces for decades. There is nothing in the SF doctrine that limits them ton working with Foreign SOF units.

BTW, in our most recent foray into Iraq, SOF Forces initially held 90% of all advisory positions and did AAA with conventional units even through the Mosul liberation. That's just the facts. SOF had and will have a broader involvement in these relationships until such time that the SFAB becomes a functional unit of appropriate size. They are nowhere close now.

Yep. Essentially the SF unit organization specializing in working with conventional foreign forces. Commanded by a former SF officer. Hence the olive green beret and arrowhead patch. Well, I should say are being organized by a former SF officer.
