I was reading up on it. Another planned function of the SFAB, which I really really really really like, is that it can stand up as a full sized BCT using the core group of officers and NCOs and plussing them up with new recruits in the case of a large scale war.

It's a great idea. Unfortunately they will frick up the execution as usual. We already see an almost universal misunderstanding of what's been occurring with SFA and FID, an attempt to "borrow" lineage and cultural norms from existing SOF units, auto promotions, female positions, and volunteer bonuses for a unit that's achieved nothing. There was an obvious way to handle this correctly, but damnit, we want it NOW.

I was just doing the exact mission SFABs will be doing earlier this year. My goodness. You can go to the web page yourself.

Nope. Milley specifically addressed SOF being freed up by SFAB OPS

A completely irrelevant experience to this conversation. Nobody said conventional doesn't train foreign forces. Nobody said SFAB can't do it. Nobody even said it wasn't a good idea.

What is being said is that SFAB will alleviate SOF SFA and FID requirements, as per Milley himself. There is absolutely no way that SFAB can contribute anything significant to this capability without impacting SOF. SOF has the broadest FID SFA programs in the world, with perhaps only Iranian IRGC being anywhere close.

auto promotions
Yeah that’s stupid. Just take an experienced squad leader and send him to the SFAB for a tour, then he has infantry squad leader experience and experience in training people how to be infantrymen. Then promote him and make him a platoon Sgt back in the regular forces. It can go like that all the way up the chain. Kinda like the B billet program in the USMC.

And they are having a hard time manning even just one of them because conventional Soldiers aren’t buying into it because they’ve been doing it for the past 15 years. It’s not a glorious job and vastly different than what SF does. SF will actually go out on mission to advise their partners and it’s usually foreign commandos, MITT/SFAAT/SFAT/TAA and now SFAB trains at the strategic level.

It wasn't in the army times bruh. When you sign in at SFAB they can get you up to speed.

To paraphrase :SF is stretched too thin doing jobs that conventional forces can do, SFAB will allow them to get back to more specialized direct advise assist and accompany missions. Apologies for stating, incorrectly, that SF doesn't train advise and assist conventional forces.

Theres nothing that says if another war ramps up that SFAB units can’t operate in an advisory role in the field in combat. Conventional forces have done this before in an ad hoc fashion in combat.

It’s not. What BCT’s have been doing the past decade is what these SFABs will be doing. I’ll eat my crow if they venture anywhere in to SOF operations, which is highly unlikely

SF does both strategic and tactical level AAA. It's not that sexy for them either. It's a grind. Getting accompany auths is a mighty struggle in many places.

Nobody disputes this.

You have it backwards. SF has been venturing into conventional territory. That's part of the point of the SFAB

No they can’t. Guys will either get out or attempt to find something else to do or somewhere else to go. Plus the SFAB has there own ridiculous standards. Army is sending out a shite load of recruitment emails for this, they are having a hard time finding folks.

No talking in circles young man. I am speaking about doctrine. FID has historically been a SOF mission that has been taken on by conventional forces because of the debacles that occurred with OIF and OEF. Doubt you would know me because I am much (much) more senior than you (COL with five years time in grade) and I work in the AMEDD (we are an Army unto ourselves). But you never know.

Exactly. And they shouldn't make them either. They have to do this organically or it won't work. They need to start slow and steady and let the soldiers do great things. Then it will grow.

Straight from the horses mouth

quote:

SFABs allow the Army to reduce, over time, the demand for conventional Brigade Combat Teams for combat advising. This will allow BCTs to focus on readiness for warfighting against near-peer threats.

Not a whole lot to do with SF my friend
