Do you think barriers are meant to 100 percent prevent access?

To unauthorized vehicles on Bourbon Street? Yes. I thought the Police Commissioner was quite clear: "We were aware of the possibility of something like this happening..." And then she passed it onto the precinct captain who said in effect, "The only way to get around the barrier was to drive on the sidewalk."

This is a completely tragic story. I wish there were more transparency. "The reason that we didn't block the sidewalk was...."

I am sure that the those involved feel horrible. But this would have seemed an easy fix for high volume nights such as New Year's. Put concrete barriers sufficient to block vehicles on the sidewalks, but with passage for pedestrians. Have a manned patrol car on the street. If access is needed to the street, briefly move the patrol car.

Was the police vehicle barricading the street, yes.

You serious, Clark? The NOPD car was acting more as a traffic signal than a barrier. Wasn't 'blocking' the entrance, plainly as the truck had a clear shot down Bourbon as soon as he passed the car.

Tell that to the Police Superintendent and the Precinct Captain. You didn't watch the press conference, did you?

Sorry, not following your logic. How does the "clear shot down Bourbon" effect whether or not the patrol car was being used to block the entrance?

Why did that camera specifically follow the white Ford truck and zoom in just before the truck turns right?
This is interesting

Did you watch the vid? The cop car was parked on the right side of street, blocking 'normal' traffic, but wasn't in the middle, blocking both lanes. Why not just drop off several concrete barriers? if the galaxy brains decided to work on the bollards and make them ineffective, go to plan B. A cop car causally posted as it was? That's just lazy AF.

I watched the video. I also watched the press conference where the police explained that the bollard to block the street wasn't working.

So they had a patrol car to block the street. When asked about the obvious hole in this solution (the sidewalk), the police captain said that he couldn't have forseen someone driving on to the sidewalk to get around the patrol car. At that point, Gov. Landry stopped the discussion.

Watch the two minutes from the 36:40 mark of this video. It will blow your mind:

This guy with the phone camera just happened to be following and zooming on that truck, before the attack?

Yeah it’s no one’s fault that this happened. This nut job was hell bent on hurting people and if it wasn’t bourbon st then he would have done on the next street with a bunch of pedestrians.

Wow, that presser looks TOTALLY professional. And props to NOLA for hiring Grandma Kirkpatrick as Superintendent for the NOPD. Cracking job.

Its amazing that you need an explanation for this. It wasn't blocked by car for obvious reasons.

They clearly did not foresee something like this happening. Its not like there was some calculated decision not to put anything there.

The video is being played on a monitor, and then recorded via phone, who is zooming in on the screen so they can follow the truck. It's not someone standing on the sidewalk recording in real time.

This. Hell, he could have stayed on Canal and ran up the sidewalk right by where he turned and done something similar.

If someone wants to kill people with their vehicle, they can find an opportunity to do it.

Seriously, how can you look at that set up and not think "yeah, but couldn't someone just drive around the barricade by driving on the sidewalk...there's not even a curb?"

I mean, there was a curb. The bumper of the officers vehicle went up to it. The truck drove on the sidewalk. As I said, the road WAS blocked, the sidewalk…obviously not.

Passed it by going onto the sidewalk. The roadway, where most bollards are) was blocked. Perhaps you should re-watch the video.

To me, it looks like he drove around the patrol car onto the sidewalk.
