Google on Friday threatened to make its search engine unavailable in Australia if the government went ahead with plans to make tech giants pay for news content.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison quickly hit back, saying “we don't respond to threats.”

“Australia makes our rules for things you can do in Australia,” Morrison told reporters in Brisbane. “That’s done in our Parliament. It’s done by our government. And that’s how things work here in Australia.”

The mandatory code of conduct proposed by the government aims to make Google and Facebook pay Australian media companies fairly for using news content the tech giants siphon from news sites.

Google has faced pressure from authorities elsewhere to pay for news.

Apparently, the Aussies have been watching and learning!

So... a news agency has a website with stories they post, and they rely on search engines for eyes on their content, supported by advertisers.

Seems like Google and Facebook are doing them a solid to get eyes on their content. What's the problem?

Government is now downstream from big tech. Our gay Silicon Valley overlords are higher up in order than actual policy makers.

Australia is making them pay for it. Google says nope, we ain't paying.

what Australia is sctually doing is making Google and Facebook accountable for their biased bullshite. good for them. if more countries would do this, the media bias would end quickly

My first thought was that there are plenty of search engines. Google aught to be sucking off every one to use their platform. It isn't the most populated country but it is a start. If 90% of Australia swaps to Bing, duckduckgo or yahoo even then that is a lot power being removed from google.

And the Dissenter browser seems to work well too. No issues since I started using it a few weeks ago.

Google: Our employees support Joe Biden who will work for “income inequality”, “equality of outcomes”, wealth distribution, and higher taxes.

Also Google: “We don’t wanna pay for content we don’t generate!!”

I guess the issue is this. What is this siphoning they are talking about?

Is it that people just read snippets on Google, so they never have to go to the site? C'mon, some techie on here should be able to answer this!

The way the proposed code is currently written, Google would have to pay publishers when users find their content in search results. This is very different than, say, requiring Google to pay publishers when they display “snippets” of the article in search results.

It’s a little absurd when you think about it - Australia is saying Google should have to pay publishers for permission to provide users with a link to those publishers’ content.

If you’re running a business in a dying industry, that makes most of its money on clicks, I’m not sure requiring Google to pay you for permission to get you more clicks makes a lot of sense. That’s like saying DOTD should have to pay businesses for permission to install roads that allow customer access. Or that Uber should have to pay bars for permission to pick up/drop off at their location.

Not to mention the fact that, apparently, Google and Facebook are the only companies affected by the proposed code at this time.

I’m all about regulating big tech but I’m not sure this is the way to do it.

I know many people have done this before, but I jsut did a search of "Biden Lies" in Google and DuckDuckGo. The results discrepancy is amazing. The first 2 articles in Google are "Biden Moves Past Trump Era" and "Joe Biden Was Right ABout the Lies In Politics"
The first 2 in DuckDuckGo were "The Very Long List of the Many Times Biden's Been Caught in Major Lies" and "Lies, Damn Lies andthe Truth ABout Joe Biden"

We definitely need more government intervention.

We have government intervention in places where it is not needed, and we don't have it in places where it would actually do some good. That's government for you though

Yea, I feel like I'm missing something because that sounds dumb on Australia's part IMO. Why should Google have to pay for that? It's the internet, it's public, I don't get it.
