I think most teachers agree and voted no but that’s will only increase the pressure the Unions will put on the state to figure out something quick..Talks have begun with Louisiana teacher unions that a Teacher strike is eminent. You can’t deny a raise and in return cut the $2500. Also factor in the results from the last few states that had statewide teacher strikes, I doubt blame them one bit

Teachers are highly dramatic. They knew the pay while getting the degree and still choose to do it.

You'd better hope a teacher doesn't grade your OP.

All the teachers I know, ones like my wife who aren’t beholden to the unions, were wholeheartedly against the raise due to how it was being funded. It was opening the door to raiding the pension fund. The ones making noise are the dumbasses on the left who don’t understand and only see this small raise as some kind of progress.

27-year teacher here. I voted NO.

The teachers I know both active and retired voted no.
Granting this and other administrations the ability to go into the designated accounts and leave the replacement funding open ended was a bad idea IMO.
It felt like Landry was putting up a token increase to get this done. It felt like some frickery from the start.

Let them strike. They've gotten 2 raises since 2019. $800 and $1500. Am I supposed to vote for them to have a pay raise every 2 years??

Yeah well the pay hasn’t increased like most job promotions and the atmospheres of most schools paired with how different parental involvement and accountabilities work currently, the compensation needs a be adjusted. Parents will be applying so much pressure on the legislation by Labor Day to get the kids in school.

Every teacher I've ever known gets a raise every single year. What they call a "raise" is actually just a change to their set raise schedule that they get automatically regardless of performance.

In some parishes you are correct. Parishes like St. Charles and St. James have done this but most only have minor increases like $300-$400 a year

You're telling me the state of Louisiana doesn't do step raises? This would be unusual.

Every parish is different. Teachers in St. Charles parish make 70-80k
Teachers in Vermilion parish make 40-50K

Completely irrelevant to my question. Does the state of Louisiana have a set step raise schedule to teachers?
Your unwillingness to answer this question makes me think the answer is detrimental to your argument that teachers aren't getting raises.

How has this thread gone so long without someone referencing yet that "teachers get their summers off".
What has happened to the OT that I loved?

No the State does not. Each individual parish determines salary schedule increases. Some do as some don’t. I can go down to 3rd grade level reading comprehension next if you need…lol

Glad it was voted down. It was short term thinking.

That is one of the perks of the job.
Teachers work 9-10 months, and you are off for two weeks for Christmas, a week for Thanksgiving, a week for Mardi Gras, a week for Easter, and several banker holidays too like MLK day, Labor Day, and now Columbus day as some districts take a few days off for Fall break.
That work schedule is making me think of switching to education. I know it may not be all rosy, but that is a hell of a schedule change from what I am doing now. I wouldn't know what to do with myself with all that time off baked into to the schedule.

Depends
So my wife is a teacher close to retirement. She has public school 1st graders. Of the 22 in her class, 20 are black children. Open House or Parenrt/Teacher conferences are poorly attended. Parents have zero interest in their children and use public education as nothing more than a daycare
Several of the children in her class have no business being there. They suffer with learning disabilities or some other form of mental handicap. However, if these kids aren’t allowed access to class with the “normal” students, their parents will simply sue.
Teachers have zero ability to enforce discipline in their classrooms, and even the youngest kids understand that.
About the only thing that can be done to the problem children is prevent them from going on field trips or going out to recess.
And yes, she is told to pass kids who aren’t ready to move to the next grade.
If you have a teacher who genuinely cares about their students, it’s not an easy job. Sure, it’s not physically demanding but having to deal with the stress of not being supported by powers that be and decision makers truly sucks.

My wife, brother in law and sister in law are all teachers. Each of them have jobs in the summer months. Lots of Louisiana teachers work summers.
