I have two girls to put through college and if it’s going to cost me half a million, they will just have to learn a trade. I’m becoming more and more sold on the idea anyway. Or join the service. Not opposed to that either.

Exactly !

The idiots whining about college debt is getting old.

They should blame their parents and stop expecting other people to bail them out.

Typical fricking Liberals.

Every situation created here was created by a Prog.

Progs in Academia benefitted charging this moron 250K for her education. Now that she's brainwashed, Progs in DC will get her vote because she is a leach.

My parents went to college and I went to college (late 70s/early 80s) and my kids got college degrees. But man are universities bloated liberal (and expensive) waste bins. I wish fewer kids would go and find their way without this institutionalized brain washing. I can't stand what colleges do outside of providing some kids job opportunity. Now days, even "conservative" schools have liberal faculties and bloated administrative and seemingly unaccountable staff.

The conservative Hoover Institute is attached to the most liberal Stanford University in a most liberal state California now. How does conservative thought even have a chance anymore.

She must be a dumbass and had to repeat several semesters of college and spent her loan money like a rich girl. There's no way anyone should accumulate that much debt for a speech pathology major.

If she is anything like some of my fiancée's peers in dental school, she blew thousands on meals, designer clothes, and traveling. My fiancée got her DMD and Ph.D. with zero student loans and graduated with $50k in savings which she has used to fund her residency program. Absolute bullshite that these little morons rack up so much debt then expect to be let off.

Yeah they are. Many a hearing impaired/deaf client needed these days with the advances in hearing technology and cochlear implants.

Medium salary of around $75,000 and growing - up 21% from 2014 to 2017.

But she should be able to pay that back in time if she is young. If she goes to work for a non-profit hospital (and has the right kind of loan), it can actually be forgiven in 10 years.

So, if one graduates in their 20s and starts to pay their loan, by the time you are in your mid-30s with the rate the job’s salary is increasing, you can have a close to $100k job without a school loan. AND, you are actually doing a job that improves people’s lives.

College is a choice. You can go to community college if you can't afford the "school of your dreams".

Speech path is a great career field, that doesn't require a 250k debt service when you graduate.

This board amazes me sometimes. I even agreed with the OP. I think this girl is foolish for having racked up so much debt. I'm not "on the girl's side." I'm just baffled at how this board is apparently anti-speech pathologist now that they read an article where one of them is a Bernie supporter.

Can I explain the need for these highly-paid professions? Why do you think they are highly-paid?

If you had a kid born with a speech impediment, you'd have your answer. Goodness gracious.

Good lord you are obtuse, just because a skill is not in high demand does not make it unimportant.

Not one single person has made the point you are arguing against, you are just so wrapped up into battle with your strawman you cant see it.

Can’t talk as in mute, probably not. Can’t talk correctly because of mild to moderate problems, yes. 2/4 of my biological kids had speech therapy before they started school and are fine now; quite a few of our foster kids have benefited from it as well.

Except it is in high demand.

That's why they make a median salary that's more than double the median individual income in the U.S.

And that's with people pointing out that those who work in schools don't get paid as much.

Sorry that you were wrong.

I remember I worked with someone who went to an liberal arts school in NY and was over 100,000 in debt for a criminal law degree. We worked in a courthouse and I used the term « judicial precedent » when talking about a case. I spent maybe an hour or 2 explaining to her how our legal system works and how it differs from a napoléonic civil code based legal system. I asked her « they didn’t teach you this in your program? » She said they focused on race and law etc.

Cliffs: liberal arts colleges are a scam

Huh? Read my post above. It is a job in high demand. Remember all the children that went to state run deaf school that got nothing but amplified sound from a hearing aid? Kids now go to regular public schools - while learning to SPEAK - because of the technological advancement in hearing tech., especially cochlear implants.

That job is really needed now more than ever - hence the huge salary increases for them from just a few years ago.

We understand your point of how much a college tuition is - just don’t give info. that is not factual. Some of us actually know our stuff.

No, some of you are making statements based on perceived worth, that has zero to do with amount of job openings and demand.

It aint about emotion.

Big difference. There is a potential "pot of gold" after medical school. With her degree, not so much.

226K for that degree? What would possibly make anyone think that is a good idea? Good luck taking 40 years to pay that off

More than 40 years.

She'll enroll in REPAYE where the payments are capped at 10% of her AGI. It probably won't even cover the interest so the balance will continue to climb, with interest being compounded on top of interest.. After 20 years, the remaining balance is forgiven. But, she'll get a 1099 showing that forgiveness as income. A sudden income of $350,000 will give her a one-time tax bill of about $125,000, which she'll have to take out another loan for. Then she won't be able to pay that off for another 2o or 30 years.

tldr- she gonna die with that debt.
