Gary Cohn Floats Idea of Gas Tax Hike for Infrastructure
By Erik Wasson and Mark Niquette
October 25, 2017, 2:19 PM EDT

President Donald Trump’s chief economic adviser raised the possibility of increasing the federal gasoline tax next year to help pay for the administration’s $1 trillion infrastructure plan, U.S. Representative Tom Reed said.

National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn brought up the fuel tax as a way to help fund promised upgrades to U.S. roads, bridges and other public works during a meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers dubbed the Problem Solvers Caucus on Wednesday, said Reed, a New York Republican who is co-chairman of the caucus.

There have been proposals over the years to raise the gas tax, which hasn’t been increased since 1993, but they have faced stiff opposition from congressional Republicans and others loath to raise taxes.

I'm on board with it. Why not make the people who use pay for it? They are the ones benefiting from it, no? I've been a proponent of toll roads. Wouldn't bother me in the least, if the added tax is sensible, but I didn't see in the article what that rise would be.

Sorry to disappoint you, my being a Trumper, but I'm one of those that believes in paying for what I use. I wish the other 50% of the country did.

Trump wants to fund infrastructure.

Current federal highway spending is ~$46Billion/yr.
Gas and Diesel Tax run 18.4¢ and 25¢ per gallon, generating ~$35Billion/yr ($25B & $10B respectively).
Increasing gas tax 10¢/gal would add another $19Billion to the till.

Considering we haven't had a national gas tax increase since 1993, I'd say it's about time. After all, the Obamacare tax has gone up every year since its implementation, so I'd think the Dems would be all for a tax that will improve services.

The populace in general appreciate taxes based on usage rather than generally just hacking at everyone...even better if it were temporary with a 4 year automatic sunset, forcing reevaluation

This is actually a good idea. As long as the gas tax money is not siphoned to supplement programs hurt by the tax cuts.

Our roads and bridges are in terrible shape and we need to do something. Moreover, Trump explicitly promised infrastructure spending while on the campaign trail ao it would great to see him keep that promise.

I 100% agree with you, including the concern you expressed about the money not being spent as intended.

We have a heck of an infrastructure problem in this country. Not just roads and bridges, but various things think water pipelines, dams, and a slew of other things.

A lot of stuff we depend on was built in the 1800's even for large NE cities. And a lot was built in the 1900's up through the 30's, then another big lot in the 50's.

Those guys built it because there was a need, but no one figured we'd just coast the way we have since the 70's basically. Sooner or later you have to do some expensive maintenance on this stuff.

Right now they just put out fires on stuff that could kill a lot of people if it failed (dams), or effectively use band aids on whatever boo boo popped up.

But a lot of bridges for example are in bad shape.

Good idea. Tax shared by all who use the road. I would exempt 18 wheelers. That's a cost that just gets passed on to consumers.

Example - the I-30 bridge connecting Little Rock and North Little Rock. The state wanted federal fund help in "repairing" the bridge. The feds sent in a crew to assess the situation. The Feds refused to give the state any money for repairs. The reason - the bridge is beyond repair. It has to be replaced. This was about two years ago.

Update: there ain't one. People still driving over it and not one damn word from the state, that I know of, on what their solution to the problem is.

No way Jose. Reader's Digest about 25 years ago had an article about highway deterioration. In the article it said one 80,000 lb. loaded semi did as much damage to a mile of highway as 6,300 automobiles do.

That's a lot of truck wear and tear on our roads.

No doubt. 18 wheelers are the main culprits that destroy the roads and bridges in Arkansas. I would encourage them to transport more goods across country using trains. Cutting that traffic back would save a lot of wear and tear on the roads and make for a better commute for cars and pickups.

Support only if it's a temporary tax with a sunset clause used specifically to raise money for day a 10 year infrastructure project

Don't they use funds from the Highway Trust to pay for bike trails?

I don't necessarily have a problem with this. And I am as anti-tax as it gets.

here's a novel idea: divert the money from special interest spending and welfare fraud and use it for infrastructure
