ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia senators torpedoed an effort to let the affluent Buckhead neighborhood secede from Atlanta on Thursday, with 10 Republicans breaking ranks and voting with Democrats to doom the measure after Gov. Brian Kemp’s administration questioned its legality and workability.

“If we jerk the heart out of the city of Atlanta, which is Buckhead, I know our capital city will die,” said Sen. Frank Ginn, a Danielsville Republican who chairs the committee that sent the bill to the full Senate.

The 33-23 vote to reject Senate Bill 114 could end the multiyear movement to create the proposed Buckhead City, driven by conservative residents who claimed the Democratic-run city wasn’t doing enough to fight crime and provide services, especially considering that Buckhead makes up less than 20% of the city’s population of 500,000, but about 40% of its tax revenue.

“These people are being ignored,” Sen. Randy Robertson, a Cataula Republican who sponsored the bill, said just before the bill was defeated. “And I think the response that we’ve seen has been just enough and then they hope it will go away.”

If the bill had succeeded, it would have set up a referendum on creating a new city that could have cast a harsh spotlight on efforts by a richer, majority-white neighborhood to divorce itself from the poorer, Blacker city at the heart of the Deep South’s largest urban area.

Probably the same as Louisiana, white dudes who are Democrats at heart but have to pose as Republicans in order to get elected. Especially those of the trial attorney ilk.

10-15 years ago Buckhead was great, people loved it there

Now I can't find a reason anyone with the means to leave would even consider staying

How dare “those people” have a say in how they are governed. The galll. The audacity.

What a fricked up thing to say trying to paint this a negative.

Because they answer to the Club For Growth/Bushes/right wing of the Uniparty.

It’s why they want to make sure their guys are in charge. By any means necessary

IOW … rob them of their right to govern themselves, since we’ve done such a shitty job of governing.

I probably would have been more for it if Buckhead city wasn’t spearheaded by a gay Yankee who has lived in the city for only a handful of years.

Why do they need the permission of the Georgia Senate to secede from Atlanta?

If the residents (property owners that pay taxes) of Buckhead are concerned with crime coming into their neighborhood what is to stop them from forming their own police force ?
Those citizens could meet somewhere and form a security force with dedicated funds, hire their own police people, buy needed equipment, and build a jail. Have a local judge swear them in and just enforce the laws on Georgia's books.
True they are already paying taxes to their county/city for police protection but it is evident that it is not up to high quality standards.

They secede one way or another. The one that's left to them will leave another ghetto in what was once a thriving part of that declining city.

The only answer is like what happened in the early 80’s and covered by a multi part series in the Sunday Times Picayune…. “White Flight”. It’s only going to degrade like New Orleans

Not really. Buckhead was already lost well before then. Ray Lewis had his little block party in 2000. That was the beginning of the end. They basically bulldozed the late night club scene part of Buckhead in 2007 in order to drive out the late night criminals and replace the club/bar revenues with a safer retail and dinner crowd…..it didn’t work. Expect Buckhead residents to flee.
