Stumbled on this jewel from 30 years ago. Please note that Frank Z was always "a progressive thinker in all of his affairs" but not always in the traditional manner so take it for what it's worth but...

Go to the 5:20 mark on this long lost video and get Frank Zappa take on CNN, the media and politics in 1989

Oh my.... how far we have come!!

Grew up loving FZ music and his intellect. Did not always agree with him but music transcends politics.

Thanks for sharing this.

Times have definitely changed.

Going to listen to the guitar solo from Inca Roads off One Side Fits All then maybe Dinah Moe Hum.

He’s a fricking moron. CNN was NEVER anywhere near a millimeter right of center.

Naming his kid “Moon Unit’ should tell you all you need to know about his intellect.

Zappa's song, "I'm The Slime", reflects his thoughts on mainstream media.

And believe it or not, Frank was a conservative. He states this ~3 minute mark in the interview linked below.

I’ve seen plenty of liberals label CNN as centrist and of course more far left like Europeans think they’re right wing. So that view still hasn’t changed from the views of many on the left.

It is amazing how different people views on various topics can be. The political spectrum is wide and deep.

Which is weird why politics are seen as a simple straight line

Not true. They were very much a centrist/slightly right of center organization right through their coverage of the first Gulf War which is what put them on the map (bear in mind the linked FZ interview was mere months after Bush 41 was sworn in).

As a matter of fact, they were marketed as being an ideological counterpoint to the liberal news bureaus at the major networks. Of course when they took off in the ratings in early '91 due to the war, they had the wherewithal to hire more mainstream (read: liberal) journalists, finally culminating in the hiring of uber-leftist Rick Kaplan to run the network in 1997.

I agree with Griswold on this. And I started watching CNN when it was created, long before Gulf War I. They were centrist from the beginning, not right of center at all. Of course, that seems right wing compared to left wing networks. But their talent hires were journalists like today who leaned heavily Dem and were more critical of GOP.

The time frame when they became extreme left wing is foggy. I'd put it 15-20 years ago.

On Dec 7 1991 CNN commemorated the 50th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor by interviewing a survivor...

Of Hiroshima.

That's right, to remember the day which will live in infamy they chose to promote the idea of Japan as victim.

That was a turning point for me, and the way I see the MSM

CNN has never been right wing hogwash. Never, not ever.

ETA: CNN was founded by Ted Turner, one of the biggest Globalists to ever walk the planet. He has also donated billions of dollars to the UN, so this should tell you all you need to know about CNN (other than being the propaganda apparatus for Bill Clinton during his presidency).

Correct.
Their excuse for an anti-American bent back in the day was the "need to protect CNN's international reporters."

Nah. Zappa was one of the few free thinkers that made it to the 80s.

He would know. Frank's father worked for the military-industrial complex.
