Fox just said he was driving up to a checkpoint and someone fired on him. He was hit in the neck and killed and his buddy was rescued by Ukrainian forces.
Fox said they cannot confirm who shot him (Russians or friendly fire by Ukraine). All they can say is he was shot at a checkpoint in his car.

This isn't Afghanistan where you're comfortably protected by overwhelming American force. This is an all out war in Europe with both sides using large numbers of troops and modern equipment. The enemy has air superiority with Drone and other Aircraft. Any American journalist should have pulled out 2 weeks ago
