then why don't they control the capital, as that was their primary objective?
No. Where on earth did you come up with that? Go re-read what Putin's objectives were.

They're using tanks for targeted assassinations? Interesting.
They are sending more than tank groups.

Why would they want Kiev? They're trying to force formal acknowledgement of Crimea, Luhansk, and Donetsk as Russian territories. An actual occupation of Kiev would be a headache that achieves nothing.
So taking the capital and seat of government achieves nothing?
Putin thought they could steamroll on in and the Ukranians would simply fold and it didn't work out quite as they expected.
So now they are settling and shifting forces to consolidate their gains in the East. They couldn't take Ukraine or take down the government and badly underestimated their ability and the Ukranians ability to resist. So they will try and take the Donbass, link it up with Crimea, and proclaim victory.

Is there even a need for tanks at this point?
Farmers have to have some sort of crop to harvest.

So you are saying the 1st Guards Tank Army wasn't in Ukraine already?

The Javelins will make short shrift of those tanks. I also may be a distraction for something else.

Gary Schroen led that mission. Great man. He was supposed to retire fall of 01, but then 9/11 happened.

The Javelin has been the biggest surprise of the war, and 90 percent of the reason that Russia hasn’t taken the whole country by now. But it would be foolish to bet against the Russians figuring out a way to neutralize them.

I think the Russians will be able to cut off and destroy the Ukrainians in the Donbas. They’re pushing south from Izium now.
I don’t think it makes sense for the Russians to declare victory and go home after that though. Post war Ukraine would rapidly remiliterize, and from the Russian perspective, the security situation isn’t much better than before.
I assume the Ukrainians would continue to fight a covert war in the Donbas, in this scenario, with continued western support. The war would have resolved nothing for the Russians.
I don’t know what will happen when the UA is destroyed in the Donbas, but it would make sense for the Russians to turn and push for Odessa then.
Capturing the coastal region down through Odessa would leave Ukraine damaged and reduced. And much less capable of threatening Russia in the future.

This is an incredibly naive take.

Do you seriously believe that Putin's goal was to occupy and eventually annex the entire country? Why would he want that headache?

Who would have ever thought that Klinger of MASH fame would now be an accepted “norm” in the American military.

I heard a few weeks ago that the Russian strategy involves sending in the elite troops at the very tail end of things.

ADA MANPADS scare tanks? That's curious.

You mean like he did in Belarus? And also in keeping with his stated goal of reforming the Soviet Union.
Yes, I do.
I think his goals are Russian expansion and we gave him an excuse by having Ukraine flirt with NATO mambership.
