He should be bashing his opposition and selling himself as a deal maker that can handle Trump,
He cannot PR wise because of the way Canadians feel about the rhetoric headed their way. If it was simply about tariffs and so on then yes. The 51st State stuff and "governor", etc has them not in the mood for dealmaking.
As reality sets in they will likely be in a different mood for a deal (aka how much they need the US), but currently no.
We are in a short term moment of a long term play.

Trump will start softening the rhetoric on their sovereignty when he thinks they are ripe for a deal.

Agree. I have no position on Pierre, but I'm not going to feign anger at him advocating for his country.

So he says:
“President Trump, Canada is a sovereign nation separate from the United States and always will be. We are not the 51st state. I plan on being the next Prime Minister of Canada, not its governor.
To my fellow Canadians, the leaders of the Liberal Party including the current Prime Minuster and the governor of Ontario have handled this rhetoric all wrong. I will work with President Trump to improve and continue the friendship our two nations have had. I will work with him to create a trade agreement that benefits both countries and improves our bond as neighbors. Antagonizing him and threatening him only makes a tense situation more volatile. Threatening to turn off people’s power is cruel and punishes innocent everyday people who just want to live their lives. The common sense approach is to negotiate with President Trump on behalf of the Canadian people to find a solution that benefits Canadians and Americans alike.”

It's crazy to think that him winning or losing could decide Alberta's attempt to leave Canada which could eventually cause a chain that will end the country as we know it.
He was a voice of reason against Trudeau, kind of sad now.

Alberta's not leaving Canada, and we don't want them.
Posted on 3/28/25 at 9:56 am to Fun Bunch
That's why I said attempt. Atlantic Canada will do everything in the power to stop them but if Trump gets on their side whether it be for their independence a territory or a state, their chances could go up tremendously to be one of those either way.

The last poll on the topic in Alberta had 70% remain while 23% leaving. That is somewhat significant but not what seems to be portrayed in the right wing twitterverse.

That’s fine. They’re are gonna have a rough decade anyway. Let the libs take the fall for it.

Yeah, I was just in Canada and spent some time with Albertans and I could tell you that there are some that don't even smile when you mentioned the prospect of joining us. Very proud. The more research ones that have weighed the pros and cons are more for it. And if Carney wins you will see polls change on all options. We will see soon.
Interestingly some Canadians think what Carney just said about our relationship with them ending was historic and has some scared. We here barely even noticed.

Cry me a river. Reciprocal. Why are you fricking clowns ok with EVERY country on the planet having tariffs against US products and you whine like little toddlers when someone finally has the balls to reciprocate?
Oh and you probably also cried about the Chinese tariffs in Term one. The tariffs that Biden KEPT when he took office.
Canada refused to help with border security and drugs. They are the ones that blew the cordial relationship up.

Meh
He is who he is. That’s the problem.
But if he were truly a conservative he could make a very simple and popular case.
“Trump is America First. We need the same in Canada…someone who always puts Canada first.
This will allow productive negotiation with Trump. This will allow the two nations to prosper together.
My opponents who think it is wise and productive to antagonize the United States will end up severely harming Canadians.”

Pierre is a cuck. He’s left of Clinton and a globalist. Canada is doomed.

Trump didn't make it about business such as tariffs but he made it personal. They took all the talk of Governors, 51st states, and other insults personally.
Just like Southerners do when the North starts bashing them. Trump should have stuck to business instead of making it personal.

Which is why there are talks in Ottawa on decoupling from the U.S., particularly on trade.
They are at our mercy, and a reasonable Canadian approach would be to manage exposure to political changes in the U.S.

The conservatives are toast in Canada. Getting rid of Trudeau is probably the biggest factor, but POTUS needlessly being obnoxious is also a huge factor. Canadians are patriotic.

Canada needs the US massively more than the US needs Canada.
No honest person disputes that. Canada is also a friend and ally. Coming this hard at them out of the blue isn’t good strategy.
They need us more than we need them, but we absolutely benefit in having a close relationship. Driving them away on purpose is just dumb. Same with Europe. Fundamental changes to the relationship are needed on the economic and security fronts, but I don’t see how slamming the door helps anyone in the United States.
