Wow! DeSantis has more power in Florida than Disney.

Likely. They are majority good guys.

I imagine Disney will shop around for a judge willing to grant them some level of injunctive relief along the lines that Disney was specifically targeted by DeSantis (the government) for expressing free speech.

DeSantis and the legislature could counter that Disney wasn't targeted with any restrictive legislation, rather a revocation of a state granted privilege which the legislature holds the power to do.

I think this is only the beginning of this whole saga and Disney isn't going to go quietly about it.

Some liberal judge will overturn this.

GOP controls both chambers. And remember they passed the anti-grooming bill. So I say chances are good.

When people openly flaunt the law and the law responds accordingly, then yes, it is retribution. That's how it works.

I believe Ron covers that by going after multiple other non-Disney related special jurisdictions in the same legislation.

They can try.

Repealing the district wouldn’t be instant anyway, as it would have to sunset by a certain date in order to prepare for the county to take over their part.

And this all potentially goes away if Disney kneels and apologizes.

You may be right, laws mean nothing to them. However, under Dillon's Rule, any level of government below the state level can be created or abolished at will. If Florida wanted to dissolve Pensacola or Escambia County it could.

And in this case RCID isn't the only special district affected by the legislation, there are four others (though one is scheduled for voter affirmation in November of this year).

My SO's mother and stepfather live in Florida and are solid Republicans. They love DeSantis (as do we).

We've decided we will support Ron over Don, but if Don wins the nomination then him over Joe (or more likely Kamala).

For the 100th time.. Ron is not running. He has already stated that. The LT Gov and all the cabinet was there.

Ron, like most rational people, believes the 2020 election was indeed stolen and stated that he will back Trump.

The legislation has a scheduled sunset date of June 1, 2023 for any district falling under it (but can be renewed afterwards by another law). So that would give Orange and Osceola Counties time to take over. And they would get a share of RCID's assets so that would help them.

Oh BTW both Orange and Osceola Counties are strong Dem territory. And haven't Dems been arguing about companies "paying their fair share"?

Ron Desantis is the Republican Party's last hope.

If conservatives in this country hope to preserve any vestige of the type of conservativism they grew up with, then this is the guy. There's no one else.

And what all of you should fear is Donald Trump's ego fricking it all up. He's the only one who can stop Ron Desantis. The media can't stop him. The Democrat Party can't stop him. Our colleges and universities can't stop him.

If you allow it, Donald Trump will divide conservatives in this country and everything you hope to gain from a unicorn like Ron Desantis will be incinerated. There won't be another one like him.

Right now, conservatives and the Republican Party are so out of sorts, so demoralized that they'll take support wherever they can find it. Porno actresses, old tranny athletes, stoned socialist podcasters and even Bill Maher for Christ sake. If that fricker just says one thing that makes sense, half this board wants to give him a handjob. All of this and so much more represents the desperation of the Republican Party and Conservatism.

In the 80's and 90's the conservative movement produced world class intellectuals. Look at it now. Look at what it's become.

If any of you believe Donald Trump has the character and temperament to lead this country back to something you would recall from the Reagan years, you're out of your fricking minds.

He likely won't since Florida has term limits on its governors. If he dropped out half way he could never run again to finish out a term.

But never say never.

“The special district does not exempt Disney from paying property taxes,” Clark said. Disney is Central Florida’s largest taxpayer, paying nearly $300 million per year in property taxes to Orange and Osceola counties, as well as about $250 million in other state taxes.
