He came in fifth ort sixth in the primary in the 2016 Senate election. I doubt Fleming has the chops.

Fleming has a very good chance to primary Cassidy because Bill won’t benefit from democrats crossing over to vote for him. Fleming will struggle in the general election against the democrat under the new rules.

You think Cassidy got elected because of his "chops"?

You also didn’t think Sid Edwards had a chance.

I think I’ll take a pass on your judgment.

There's the rub. Democrats would be foolish not to field a strong, moderate candidate, but they are in such disarray that they probably won't.

I didn't say anything about Cassidy. I think Fleming is too milquetoast to win a primary. The guy has no personality and didn't gain any sort of following last time he ran for Senate.

Very true there. Happy to eat crow on that one, which I don't think many people saw coming.

Plus, I don't know that I would even want Fleming. What has he done? He's a part of the same LAGOP that is constantly failing already.

The next time republicans in Louisiana are given a choice of something other than between a party stooge and a goofball for Congress or Senate will probably be the first.

The best we can hope for is to probably be able to hold the stooges in check for getting too stoogey, like Cassidy.

I don't think I'm too concerned with him toppling someone based on purely personality, charisma, or "chops." At least, i can't imagine immediately casting a potential challenger of his aside purely on such traits at this point.

Getting people excited about you and your candidacy is the single most important thing in politics. Fleming isn't a good speaker, and wasn't a good campaigner.

Whether he would be good at the job if he held the office isn't relevant to the question of his chances in a primary election. He already ran in one, and did very poorly. That was my point--we've seen the guy run, and he wasn't good at it.

I'd vote for him in a general election, but I'm not hanging my hopes of Cassidy getting primaried on John Fleming.

You think Flemming is milquetoast but Cassidy is some kind of high-energy type? I don't know how anyone could be more vanilla and robotic than that creeper.

But moreover, I don't think you fully understand how reviled he is now here by his own party. So far every person in this thread has mentioned him with such disdain, how on Earth do you think he'll galvanize any kind of base? He's hated. He was rightfuly censured by the GOP here. How could he even run for reelection with a straight face?

The only good thing about him running is the hilarity that will ensue from his humiliating defeat.

If Cassidy falls in line with MAGA and behaves like a good soldier he will probably get re-elected.

Cassidy is an incumbent. There have only been a handful of Senators to lose a primary historically. Cassidy will have the RNC and GOP Senate fundraising apparatus supporting him as well.

I see it here, every day.

This place is far from representative of the electorate in LA. Most people aren't paying attention to politics at all, much less the actions of individual Senators. Sad but true.

Luckily the deep state doesn’t run this state. We have to watch out instead for the republicans for Honor Code crowd.

The Republican Party apparatus in this state is probably more insidious than whatever you think constitutes the "deep state."

however, some of Trumps biggest financial supporters in the state are behind Cassidy and could convince Trump to stand down.

Why would that sway Trump?

Cassidy’s chance at keeping Trump out if the race is based on what Cassidy does to support Trump in the Senate.

If he gets in line, he may be able to survive.

Personally, I won’t vote for Cassidy no matter what he does.
