I actually like Stubb. He's the most reasonable of the Western European leaders. Europe has 3 times the population and 10 times the GDP of Russia. They can defend themselves if they really want to. They've just had no motivation because we've been doing it for them.

Eventually they likely can. The US should want them to continue being more able junior partners rather than actual rivals.

This is the biggest issue. We've not only protected Europe from Russia, but we've protected it from itself as well. That whole continent was in an almost constant state of war until 1945 when we told them that they had to play nice with each other.
