One of these days, maybe in the not too distant future, the Supreme Court is going to rule that it is unconstitutional to force attorneys to pay to be part of state bar associations.
Hopefully

Only outright support one bill filed by a Republican

The bar association is against judicial transparency? Sounds like the Teamsters. Compel dues from attorneys to fund actions they disagree with. It's un-American.

I just requested a refund of my dues associated with these efforts. Here: the response I got from the Executive Director:
Dear Mr. AlxTgr:
The LSBA has been taking positions on pending legislation for years, all in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the Association's Bylaws (LINK . The process is very transparent and everything is posted on our website. Notice of the positions was included in President Robert Kutcher's email to members which went out on Friday, May 1 (see attached) and was posted on the home page of our website on Wednesday, April 29.
The LSBA's positions are developed based on consideration of these guidelines and policy positions adopted by the 226-member House of Delegates (the LSBA's policy-making body). The process includes a number of meetings by the 25-member Legislation Committee (comprised of 15 members elected by and from the House of Delegates and 10 members appointed by presidents, all serving staggered terms). The Committee then makes recommendations to the 23-member Board of Governors, which can either accept the recommendations or opt to take no position. However, because the House is the policy-making body, the LSBA is obligated to take positions consistent with House of Delegates policies. You may link directly to the 2020 Regular Session positions here: LINK
The LSBA, like other mandatory bars, may take positions on pending legislation based on the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Keller v. State Bar of California, provided that the association has a mechanism by which members may request a refund of that portion of membership dues devoted to lobbying. The LSBA has such a mechanism set forth in the Bylaws (accessible via the link above). There is a wealth of information on the LSBA's legislative activities available on our website at LINK
Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.
Best regards,
Loretta

Let us know how much they refund you. Curious to know what percentage is spent on lobbying efforts.

I have and do, but I would not be welcome in the LTLA...oh, wait, they changed their name to the Louisiana Association for Justice because they knew everyone hated trial lawyers.

Ah so your side is wearing the white hat?

No side wears a white hat, but mine is damned sure a lighter shade of grey than theirs.

An insurance defense attorney?
please. I’m guessing you’re in New Orleans with the elitist attitude you have
ETA: nevertheless, i do agree that LSBA shouldn’t be taking dues from attorneys to lobby for a position on most issues

I have one of the legislators fired up. He's looking at ways to start the push for a voluntary bar.

It’s geographically controlled to an extent also. Who in BR is active in it or cares? Being based in NOLA it’s influenced heavily based on what those NOLA attys want. I just wait on my monthly journal to see who got in trouble and when the next conclave on diversity is.

They sure as hell didn't ask for my opinion on these (although zero recovery under NPNP is harsh). I think they should poll all lawyers before taking positions, even though they would ignore the majority if they didn't agree. For the record I have never held a position with the LSBA or local bar and find the people who do to be a bunch of nerds who have nothing else to do, kinda like high school/college SGA's.

they don't care
as has been stated before, this is a Nola-BR organization
the last thing they want is "country bumpkin" lawyers to have a say

Doctors have the same problem with the AMA.
Many were miffed that the AMA endorsed Obamacare and the mutilation of healthy bodies to treat 'gender dysphoria'.

It’s def the SGA types. Who else would want to mess with it? The rest of us are out here trying to make a living.
