It's a good move.

1. Let kids pursue their dreams if they are late bloomers who can chase a pro career.

2. Nobody is going to be sad about having one less West Pointer in the battalion.

Not really. I’m just trying to understand how this is a good thing, other than the fact that President Trump signed it.

Yep. They're an advertisement for their respective branches much like other college players are for their university. A source of pride and braggadocio. Another tool for recruiting.

I’m sorry that someone would have the temerity to ask applicable questions of our infallible military and president.

I've supported what the President did here for 30 years.

But yeah, it's only because I'm a Trumpkin!!!!!

That begs the question... Why do this (other than appealing to those who are wrapped up in military worship)?

Jeebus. Do you people ever turn off your TDS?

This has been a very public issue for decades.

I got an educational delay to go to med school.

I guess they could have made me serve my obligation and I could have used GI bill for med school.

This is a rare program and probably positive for everyone.

It will be 3 to 7 players per decade most likely.

It's not complicated. I've supported the idea here since AT LEAST when this was a discussion during the time of Napolean McCallum.

And the reason isn't complicated. The reality is, the subset of academy folks who even have a shot at the pros is tiny. Meanwhile, the PR benefit to the military is great.

Hell, they called David Robinson "The Admiral" till he fricking retired from basketball.

The reality is, very few kids who think they're can't miss will sign with the Academies in the first place. But, occasionally, you'll get a surprise kid and the benefits of the Trump position here GREATLY outweigh the cost.

Hell. David Robinson grew 7 inches after arriving at the Naval Academy. shite happens that no one sees coming.

It's not like the Leanard Fournette's and Peyton Manning's of the world are suddenly going to be lining up to sign with Army.

he served before going to the NBA even though he was largely disqualified because of his height. Not a great example.

Will the CFL or Arena football count?

What good is a 32-year-old with bum knees? I guess they could push paper and collect that sweeter pension.

Probably more good than a 5-ft 100-lb woman.

Who the hell goes to a service academy as an avenue to pro ball considering that they know the rules?

The rule has been changed, I think the rule is forward looking, the academies may now be able to get some better athletes. Not that that is the point of the service academies, but if we are going to clog it up with women and soy boys, some Div I athletes can't hurt.

I know this.

I'm merely pointing out that the fact he was Navy was NEVER forgotten.

Hence, the PR benefit.

But hey. I get it. This thread is full of lefties who would almost certainly have agreed with me friggin 4 years ago on this but can't now, because Trump.

I'd just like to point out, the military does similar things already.

I helped a kid drop 2 years off his enlistment because he was accepted to Pre-Med.

The military often does things that account for special situations.

We aren't gonna suddenly see 9 people drafted in 2022 from Army.

When Robinson was there it was a topic of discussion. Many people thought it was time to address the situation. Hell the Admiral did stuff for the Navy in the off season iirc.

So these commitments college athletes make are now even more meaningless in the era of transfer portals and athletes who may bloom into superstars while at a military academy?

I wonder what Roger Staubach thinks about this.

Yes. Real life can happen.
