Players in this game are now able to pursue professional football careers (like other collegiate players) without having to fulfill their service obligation before doing so.

No link, just saw on CBS. Great President.

So they going to payback the American taxpayer for that free education?

I’m guessing they’ll receive a reserve commission and a duty station commensurate with where they end up playing.

The taxes from an NFL salary are probably worth more than an education lol.

Seems about akin to all the scholarship players on state school teams.

What if a garbage player enters the draft but doesnt get drafted and doesnt get picked up?

Is he still off the hook as he “pursued an NFL career?”

I'd have to check what the rookie minimum is, but they'll be paying some taxes.

Pretty sure that’s not how it works. You can’t just leave a service academy to enter the NFL draft. You have to complete your 4 years.

That's bullshite. You want to play pro ball? Don't go to a Service Academy, and take away an appointment from some kid who wants to serve.

If he leaves after his junior year, he owes 8 years of service per the details of his contract.

See David Robinson's career post-USNA for how this works.

That's not how it works either. Anyone who gets a nomination, by definition, takes away an appointment from "some kid who wants to serve".

How about you direct your ire towards the 20-25% of academy cadets who wash out before signing their contract during their junior year?

That sounds fair. Or allow them to fulfill the remainder of their service after they’ve retired or given up on pro football

ETA: would this EO apply to other sports with major pro leagues too or just football?

Plus the average NFL career is 3 years. You could always go back to active duty afterward. In the meantime you're an ambassador for your branch.

Not sure. I would assume so.

You do realize that there are other paths to a commission besides service academies, right?

I don’t know why people are mad about this. There may be one or two players from the service academies who would get drafted each year.

Doesn’t this ruin the service above self mantra we hear about this game? (With apologies to Rotary Clubs.)

Agree...this is an unnecessary exec order. Who the hell goes to a service academy as an avenue to pro ball considering that they know the rules?
