As long as he is not deemed a risk to himself or others, he cannot be committed involuntarily. There are hundreds of thousands of people with a mental illness who are never committed to a psychiatric hospital. That's a good thing. People with disorders like the one this individual is likely suffering from do not get better in hospitals, they get worse. Intensive outpatient treatment is much more effective.
