On one hand, this seems to have been a stupid woke thing that the UN did just because African countries thought that Mercator was racist.

On the other hand, the US probably only voted against this because Trump wants to make his holy land of Greenland look bigger than it really is.

Northern latitude (White) dominance is here to stay.

Deal with it.

I believe that the Mercator is used by Google Maps etc., since it was designed specifically for navigation. Evidently, it does a great job with right and left angles (such as at intersections).

The disagreement was largely about whether the UN should be making this a political/institutional priority and framing it as “correcting” historical representation.

Remaking the map would just make Africa and South America appear to be bigger shitholes than they are now.

It's interesting the way the different maps are and how things are stretched and so forth. It is definitely noteworthy that countries/continents are not scaled properly when flattened on a map.

However, doesn't it just make the size of the seas look bigger than they are instead? In the end you get the same amount of area from the flatten, because the issue is that you can never have an actual accurate map of the globe on 2D.

Maybe just educate people that the sizes aren't exactly to scale for them and that if they want to see that...check out a globe, the most accurate scale (lacks the pear but whatever). In the meanwhile, I think it likely much more useful to have bloated land than bloated sea. Especially considering where most of the world's population is.

Overall, I can't imagine this is an actual issue for civilization. Changing the maps doesn't really educate people, pointing out the difference does.

AI: Is there any country in Africa larger than the US?
No: The largest Algeria 919, 595 sq miles.
The United States is 3.8 million sq miles.

While the continent of Africa is 3 times the size of the US, no single country in Africa is. Africa is larger than Canada, the US and Mexico combined.
There are 54 countries in Africa and only three in Mexico, the US and Canada.

So what UN?

So every UN member country except the US voted to use Mercator because African Countries think Mercator is racist. I think you may be confused about what is actually going on.
