I don't really understand why most TEC congregations exist TBH
I assume it's mostly stuffy mainliners who do it out of tradition, but otherwise why not just start a secular social political advocacy club - as that's what they are?

The Episcopal church was founded in sin, just like the Anglican Church. Henry VIII wanted a divorce. The Catholic Church teaches, and rightfully so, that divorce is a sin.
So, to get around that, we will pick and choose what we like about Jesus’ teachings and start a new church. The founder of their church was an evil, murderous, STD having scumbag. Not a great start…..

As someone who has a sister who pastors a UCC church, this is pretty much exactly what it is. It’s a social club. I think many of the adherents have a vestigial tail of religion or some itch they can’t scratch without the form of religion. But there’s certainly no “power thereof.”

I am not sure why my comment about apartheid has rustled so many jimmies. The church cited the policy in their rationale for not accepting these refugees. Apartheid ended 35 years ago. It doesn't mean that the now ruling party is incapable of persecuting Afrikaners for political or racial reasons.
