Emory School of Medicine formally apologizes after rejecting an applicant for his race

The thread title is the CNN headline.
They left out that this happened over 60 years ago.
Not to worry, CNN. Universities all across the country are making up for it by denying entrance to qualified whites and Asians all the time now.
Ain't equity grand?
Fwiw, the man who got denied sounds like a helluva guy who didn't let genuine racism stand in his way of success. We need about 10 million more like him.

More than 60 years ago, Marion Gerald Hood was rejected from a medical school because of his race. This week, the school apologized.
So in 1959, Hood applied to Emory's medical school. The rejection took less than a week, he said.
"I am sorry I must write you that we are not authorized to consider for admission a member of the Negro race," wrote L. L. Clegg, the school's director of admissions at the time, according to the school.
Emory returned his $5 admissions fee. "I don't even know if they looked at my credentials," Hood said.
That didn't stop him, though. Hood eventually went to attend medical school at Loyola University in Chicago, specializing in gynecology and obstetrics.
"Life is full of hurdles," Hood said at the event. "But the thing that I thought is if there's a hurdle there, there must be a way to get around it or over it."

They currently still do it on a weekly basis.

Seems like he got over it.

Yeah, but it'll take longer than 60 years for them to admit it.

frick Emory.
Everyone I've ever met from that school was arrogant about going to school there.

This is the take away from that story, though it's the part that will be over looked.
At a time of ACTUAL racism, this man took his abilities and was able to apply them somewhere that wanted him. Just as he says, life is full of hurdles and he decided to get over them. Today, in a world that is practically 180 degrees opposite to what Dr. Hood lived in, we've got people suggesting it's worse than ever before and lamenting that what few obstacles remains till are completely insurmountable because of racism.
While it's really too much to ask, it's this generation of black achievers that could really be useful in speaking out against what's happening today. Young black people caught up in the BLM horse shite should be ashamed when looking at this man's life and still having the gall to suggest "the man" has kept them down.

My sister-in-law went to school there. She was such an insufferable liberal count...that is. until she stacked a boatload of cash.
Now...she is a Republican and a fiscal conservative. Go figure.

I heard just the other day an entire village was murdered by racists. Was that Atlanta? Houston? New York? Oh yeah, it was some shithole in Africa, again.

Alan Bakke was rejected from Med School because of his race. U. Calif still hasn't apologized to him.

Fun fact: The real reason was his age but Davis couldn't admit that. So an admissions counselor sympathetic to Bakke suggested that he challenge the quota system.

Wait! He became a Doctor even though he wasn't accepted to Emory? How is that even possible?

Hmmm...I bet none of his kids or grandkids are running around shooting up Atlanta.
Can we get a case study on this...maybe there is an answer to the violence problem there.

He was in his early 30s whereas most applicants are straight out of college. That puts him near 40 when he finishes residency. More important, 10 fewer years of earning power that can be used to donate to the school.

Please let tarzana and Decatur comment on this topic. Otto, go for it too.
I love idiocy.

quote:I remember he was older. I don't remember anyone claiming that was the reason he was denied entrance. Didn't he win his anti-discrimination lawsuit? It's been a long time, but didn't his lawsuit claim that he was denied entrance based on race?
