Ok. How long? Do you believe the first wright brothers flight was actually flight? Is thst the barrier? Because that flight was 12 seconds..
They had gliders that went much further and would stay in the air over a minute before that flight. They demonstrated lift, but it wasn't considered the first powered flight even though it lasted for over a minute.
The 12 seconds was the first flight because it was powered by an energy source and had the ability to glide and keep going even if that energy source left. The lift of the wings made it flight.
The roadster would fall to the ground the moment the thrusters stopped, which was only after a few seconds. It can use the thrust to jump in the air, and then it falls down the moment the thrust ends....likely violently.
Disagreeing on the basic physics of lift vs. momentum isn't a bias, it's just mechanics.
I'm surprised you guys are being so weird about this stuff. A car that can jump on its own and do that is still pretty fricking cool.

He's accusing everyone else of overthinking it, not because it's true, but because he is only capable of only UNDERthinking it. Because he has the intellectual capacity of a grade schooler.

All of that to say precisely how a rocket behaves as well. The moment you cut the thrust, the rocket falls. That doesn't mean rockets don't fly.
And before PowerRetard tries to redeem himself here, no, a rocket's conical shape and "wings" are not there to produce lift. They're there for stability.

Distance doesn't matter. Do you think Evil Knievel was flying over cars and the grand canyon? He would jump distances over140 feet. His soon has gone over 200 feet in the air - still a jump. Even when they use rockets for the thrust....still a jump.
Was his car able to manipulate gravity? Bc the roadster did which is the main component to flight. Either through propulsion, aerodynamics , thrust or other potential tech…
And if we are using the basic definition.. one could argue he did fly/glide. He just didn’t have other components to sustain flight because he lacked other elements..
The definition of flight is pretty broad .. the Question seems so weird to me because this was simply the first demo of future tech that we have no idea where it’s going to go. I don’t get why people are simply trying to look for all the pitfalls in it rather than looking at the potential. Just kind of goes with the negative attitude people have towards success and innovation.

A guided rocket or missile can actively actuate its fins or use attitude thrusters to steer, change its path, and glide to a precise target even AFTER its main engine cuts out. It has flight control mechanics built into its design.
The Roadster has nothing. Once those few seconds of air blast finishes, it is a brick completely at the mercy of a fixed gravity arc. It cannot change its path, it cannot steer to a destination, and it cannot glide.
If your definition of "flight" is literally just "anything that shoots up with thrust and falls back down when it stops," then you must think a bottle rocket or a pogo stick is an airplane. Disagreeing on the difference between controlled steering and a basic ballistic arc isn't a bias, it's just junior high physics.

No. There is no known technology that manipulates gravity.

So would a plane so would a helicopter … they’re all gonna fall straight to the ground once they lose propulsion or thrust.. the violent nature of the crash doesn’t change the reality that you need something to manipulate gravity… it can be done through aerodynamics or mechanical, and this uses mechanical functions to manipulate gravity. The thing literally fell from an inverted position, tilted over and landed softly…. God knows how much that thing weighed. This vehicle fits is the basics of flight physics..

quote:well Mr Dedication to the truth you fricking missed on this one. Comparing what you saw in that demonstration to an NBA player's jump is just fricking stupid. There's no kind way to phrase that. When an NBA player jumps his path is entirely predictable because it is completely controlled by gravity both the rise and the fall. Hence it is not flight by any definition. So you let me know when NBA players start violating physics on their own and then I won't laugh at this ridiculous post from you. You know sometimes desperately being the board contrarian just makes you look like an a-hole. And in this thread you're just being a fricking a-hole. What you saw last night was fricking amazing and you're desperation to downplay it just so you can be the board smart guy made you show your arse.
Sometimes I wish we still had sign quotes
"What's wrong with me" is my dedication to the truth and not getting emotional or irrational about things.
The tech displayed last night was great enough on its own to not engage in dishonesty about what happened. That dishonesty only cheapens the significance of the tech.

Airplanes glide.
Helicopters do not just fall out of the sky if their engine fails, they glide back down with basically full control. The rotor generates lift, and after the engine fails the rotors disengage from the engine and keep spinning. When the helicopter starts to fall, the wind hits the blades and keeps the rotor spinning allowing them to glide to the ground.
I don't remember what it's called, but there is a tree that demonstrates this with their seeds. They have a single blade but the seed weight is on the other end. You throw them into the air and the blade spins and the seed glides slowly down the ground. If the wind catches it, then it can spin and move pretty far away, which is the purpose of the seed being like that to begin with.
Hey, who says you can't learn something from video games.

It's not manipulating the forces of gravity either. Gravity isn't changing, and gravity would be one of the main CONSTANT variables in the equations used to determine how much thrust from each thruster is needed to accomplish the task
It's breaking the bounds/bonds of gravity.
Call me a nerd all you want, I don't celebrate ignorance. This is basic middle school physics.

Airplanes glide.
They can glide. They don’t always glide. They still need to manipulate the flaps and other mechanisms to provide lift and have enough stored propulsion/thrust

You are the retard who can't even pass middle school physics.
As for the helicopter, it's called auto-rotation and it's a technique helicopter pilots are trained on to make emergency landings.
Of course you not only did 0 fricking research before opening you rmouth, you call the people who did pass basic physics classes retarded.
You are ignorant and you should feel bad for it.

I'll just add manipulate to the list of words you are too stupid to understand.
The fact your vote counts the same as mine is why I think democracy is terrible.
Hey everyone, watch me manipulate gravity by picking up this pen.
