Not a pretty sight.

I have a friend who is a game ranger in South Africa. They fight poachers like it's a goddam underground war. There is too much money in trophy hunting to risk the herds.
They do more to protect and understand these herds, and ensure mans appropriate place in the food chain than anyone in the world. Liberals stomping their feet and posting snark on twitter do nothing.

Allowing legal trophy hunting gives I encentive for hunting guides to ensure the survival of elephants because it's their livelihood.
Because the problem is poachers killing them for ivory. You want the people there to have a reason to work to stop the poaching

This is true. Not to mention it helps regulate the herds. They would already be extinct if it wasn’t for the big game hunters protecting them.

Time for this post again.
In 2003 I was working in south Africa with a wealthy individual who owned a gun company. We were there to film several hunts, one of which was for elephant. While I'd seen smaller game taken before in Africa, seeing the impact the killing of an elephant has on a local tribe is unreal.
In addition to the massive price that was paid to harvest the animal, the tribe went absolutely nuts when news arrived that an elephant had been killed. We had tracked the elephants for a couple of hours and after the shot we had to walk back to the jeeps which were at least two miles away.
By the time we returned, the trackers had already begun to remove the entrails of the elephant, hanging them amongst the trees to dry in the sun. That night I witnessed one of the most amazing spectacles I've ever seen. A complete tribe, celebrating, dancing, eating, laughing. It was simply put, one of the purest forms of humanity I've ever seen.
The sheer joy on the faces of these people who I learned later, get to eat meat about once every two weeks was something to behold. I love animals but we can't allow animals to be more important than man, especially when it comes to feeding man and supporting wildlife efforts to prevent poaching.

OK, would you shoot an elephant simply for fun? No meat will go to anyone. You get a picture with the elephant, a tail, and that’s it. Do you think this is moral if the elephant has just been minding its own business?

Since we are engaging in fantasy can we shoot unicorns too?

Ok, I see all these infomercials, and how much would it have cost you to send over a few goats over murdering an elephant.
And you mentioned you found the elephant in a herd, which sickens me more. I’m at least hoping people track down dumb bulls that only affect the mother of the bull tops, but you go after the herd. frick off. You hunt down an elephant herd which makes you a fricking a-hole. Next time you want to feed Africans, send them some goats and chickens.

Such a fantasy. I’m sure Donald Trump Jr went out and killed the elephant simply for the tribe.
The biggest douchebag I personally know bragged about killing an elephant and called anyone pussies who cares about the animals. Meanwhile this rich count is bitching about how he had to pay over a million dollars in taxes right after telling/showing us that he hunted down an elephant. And then he said that none of us had to pay more than a million dollars in taxes so we didn’t know what sacrifice was. He said that thanks to him being taxed a lot we were living the life and that we should thank him personally. Granted he was drunk, but my only guilt is not pissing in his drink for being the most self righteous twat I’ve ever met.
Sorry, but these are the types of twats that go out and kill elephants. Just where nothing is good enough, they have to brag constantly, and shite on everyone because they are insecure about their small dicks. Just shoot a duck and eat it for god’s sake. I am related to an extremely rich guy, but he especially detests people like him. If you willingly go kill an elephant that isn’t doing shite, please take its trunk and tie it in a noose to hang yourself.

I'm kinda glad Trump backed out. It would have given me consternation to think that he actually might be a decent human being and not play to the lowest common denominator.

Without the hunting and tourism trade in Africa there is no conservation, no protection, and no habitat preservation. Poachers would make quick work of the species, as they've done throughout history.
There are animals that have been poached into extinction, but none have been legally hunted into extinction in a regulated environment.

First off, I don't have the money to hunt an elephant. Secondly, what's the difference between killing a goat/chicken and an elephant? It all lives, dies and is consumed.

I'm not being a smart arse, just wonder what one of those species would be.

In the late 19th, early 20th century, right around the time science was catching up to animal biology and ecology, many species were going extinct due to poaching or unregulated hunting. This knowledge brought about the methods that have allowed species to thrive in a regulated environment where man retains his vital role in the food chain.
Here are a few LINK
The american buffalo and American alligator were once brought to near extinction by poaching, and are now thriving under a well regulated hunting program. African species like desert antelope are nearly wiped out in the African Savannah, yet are thriving on private Texas game ranches. Like gun control, there is a lot of misinformation out there about this subject, and it's a purely emotional issue for many, but hunting done properly can be the absolute best thing for a species. No one ever worries about mallard ducks or white tailed deer going extinct. These are perhaps the most hunted animals in north america. Food for thought.

Elephants are incredibly smart. They have family units. They mourn for their dead. Etc.
They’re about on the level of gorillas, chimps, and bonobos, as far as intelligence goes.
I’m against hunting animals that intelligent and mentally developed.
And of course I’m against reneging on promises as well but it’s Trump. His word is worth nothing.
