It's not easy to intercept missiles and drones heading for a commercial tanker
If they fire on a naval vessel that vessel is equipped with weaponry that can intercept attacks. Then there is the speed boats.
And you have to remember, it's the threat alone that closes the strait. Maritime insurance comes into play here. No one is going to insure someone trying to traverse the strait when the Iranians are threatening the vessels.

The threat that Iran posed would not be effective for long if it wasn’t real. Eventually, someone will run through, then more, then everyone.

Iran has good drone missiles, If they were to attack a merchant ship it won’t be with a ship or plane it will be with a dozen small drones. They just have to get one through our defense once and we would have to hit every drone they fired, 100% of the time.

I wrote that I was surprised they could not secure the Strait by deploying the small drones highlighted in the OP, with cameras and explosives, against those operating and launching the drones that were harassing the shipping.

In 2016 we/they had the ability to control battalion sized forces of 4 wheeled/tracked bots with heavy fire support through 1 commander.
