So many great drummers post 1990. Travis Barker, Longineu Parsins III, Joey Jordison, etc. A lot of music snobs were so offended by how amateurish many of the grunge era guitarists that they missed out on two generations of great drummers and bassists.

In an era of great music, they were sewerage! So many great bands of the 90’s, no need to waste time on that trash.

As a drummer myself, I consider Tré Cool's work with Green Day as very good.

I remember reading in Circus or something like that in the 90s that when he was learning to play, he didn’t have cymbals or a hi hat for a long time, which is why he used the toms so much.

That's mind-blowing. Thanks!

How did MTV play them and no Days of the New?

I'm gonna respectfully disagree on Green Day, but I give you a fist bump for Days of the New. Woefully underrated.

I never really considered Travis Barker or any of the grunge or mainstream musicians talented. My top drummers would be Dave Lombardo, Joey Jordison and Danny Carey. Most metal musicians would play circles around those guys.

as described by Green Day’s song “American Idiot”?

The true question though is really why would anyone listen to Green Day?
Maybe the best album in the last 20yrs?

I have read everything there is to read now.

Thank you, I never thought I would ever hear anyone say such things about a band that played simple, made for the masses music. It was sugar punk. Nothing more. GD should have left punk in the dust bin of late 70's/early 80's history. At least that stuff was good. GD's version of it never was. It was, at best a decade later version of The Clash, after they started chasing radio playtime. At least The Clash had talent. GD never did.

We can tell you have never been a musician. You could go get an instrument today, have never played before and be able to play everything they ever wrote by this weekend.

Yeah...I play guitar and while Green Day is easy to play there is no way someone who has never played could play any of it

It takes a while to get decent on an instrument since the finger placement is so unnatural if you've never done it

Most of their songs have less than 5 chords. Several of them are only 3 chords total. I believe I could take a person new to guitar and teach them any of those songs and they could play them well enough for someone to know what they are playing within a few hours.

I am sure the next thing they will say is:

"Fred Durst was the greatest lyricist of the past 20 years".

Someone has never listened to (especially 90’s era) Green Day’s bass parts before, and it shows. A lot of pre-American Idiot bass parts are extremely challenging and intricate. The drum parts are often fairly difficult as well, more so than most “classic rock” that isn’t Rush. Yes, the guitar parts are mostly simple bar chords that someone who has been learning guitar for a few weeks could replicate. However, the bass and drums are actually quite difficult. Even professional hired guns who have been gigging in bands for decades struggle with “Longview” or the bass solo in “Welcome to Paradise”.

This comment just shows you to be incredibly ignorant about music.

Also, never count out how difficult it is to actually write catchy, concise, poppy music. As a songwriter, trust me, it’s much easier to write long complex masterbatory meandering technical songs than it is to write a short catchy hit.
