I like how one Sheriff in SE Texas handled it during Harvey. He sent out a message that said basically, "Evacuate now, and if you don't you're on your own because I'm not sending one of my deputies into a life threatening situation to rescue your arse if you stay and get water."

No.

If you want to stay, just understand that no one will be coming to rescue you and your request for assistance during the storm will be denied.

No. I agree with shouting from the rooftops "get out or you might die" but I don't believe in forcing idiots to leave. Let natural selection run its course.

i don't believe in mandatory anything unless it involves children. I DO however believe in consequences for your actions.

ex- it is not mandatory to wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle BUT, your life insurance will not pay your family.

another ex pertaining to this: it's not mandatory to evacuate BUT, if you don't life insurance will not pay your family if you die.

see? do what you want but ADD consequences. now.......you STILL have all the rights that you want.

Nope, not at all because we should be able to make our own decisions about our lives but...

if you have to be rescued, you should have to pay for all of the costs associated with your rescue.

Yes.

In an emergency situation that can be foreseen, anyone that stays behind is just an expense sucking up time and resources. All because they were too stubborn to use their common sense.

Because despite policies promising first responders they'd not have to put their lives in jeopardy in attempts to save stragglers, reality is very different in the aftermath. If the approach in addressing distressed, endangered and dying residents was "Sorry, but we recommended that you evacuate. Unfortunately, now you're on your own," I'd have no problem doing away with mandatory evacuation.

They can't force you from your home. It's mandatory in the sense that they won't be coming To save you if you're dumb enough to stay

No. But we could get more people to evacuate if we renamed these hurricanes.
Who the heck is afraid of 'Hurricane Irma'?

We need to have names like:

Hurricane Brutus the Destroyer
Hurricane Banshee the Bitch
Hurricane Gorgon the Wife from Hell

Sometimes some people need to be protected from theselves, though. THat is why they are mandatory.

Stupid parents have stupid children, so it's no big loss.

Seriously though, I don't believe in mandatory evacuations. Like most people seem to agree, though, if you stay, then you are responsible for your own actions. Don't expect to be rescued, and you should probably be billed for it.

It is not uncommon for people around the world being rescued to be charged for the service. A quick search seems to say that the Coast Guard does not charge, but Forest Services sometimes do. If you are the victim of a hurricane, you have plenty of time to act. Victims of earthquakes & tornadoes are another story.
