that many here predicted gloom and doom over
O.k., so I can stop taking your claims of that seriously because you refuse to be specific in any way. We're on the level of "Orange and anything he says good, anybody who disagrees, bad."
That's fine, as long as I know I can safely completely ignore it without risking missing something substantive.
quote:
I'm flat out saying that my life is better today.
Good for you. If you were a farmer, for example, you wouldn't be saying that right now. People with IQs north of around 90 can understand the joke about the kids who rubbed Limburger cheese on a man's mustache while he was sleeping and laughed while the guy went around trying to find what stunk and finally opened the window and took a deep breath, then said, "I can't believe it! The whole world stinks!"
It's the same concept as standing in your front yard and thinking that the weather there is indicative of the global climate.
I don't know how to explain the reality of the situation to someone like that. I suspect it's impossible.
quote:
in no small part because of the gas prices.
You realize that Trump has had almost no effect on gas prices, right? In January of last year I posted here—before Trump even took office—a report from some gas/oil agency predicting the gas prices dropping in 2025 and 2026, for factors that had nothing to to with Trump being in office (I don't remember what they were...I do remember that they were just incidental industry conditions).
You know that the Biden administration set the all time record for domestic oil production, right? And the record he broke was Trump's. And HE broke the record up to that time from 2016-2020, and the record he broke was Obama's. And HE broke the record up to that time, and the record he broke was Bush's
Do you see the pattern yet? Even with all of the gobbling about Biden denying drilling permit, we still broke the previous record for domestic oil production, which leads to the obvious conclusion that that industry is not being influenced to any significant degree (at least not relative to domestic oil production) by the POTUS, and hasn't been for some time. It's just the industry advancing.
quote:
I have seen ZERO evidence that the evil tariffs (that many here predicted gloom and doom over) have caused prices of the things I purchase to go up.
O.k., but...so what? The weather's fine in your front yard, so that means there can't be tornadoes ripping up some town in Texas, right? Just because you don't personally buy medical supplies doesn't mean that they aren't more expensive for the hospital due to tariffs (they are) and that they won't ed up effecting health care costs. For one example.
That also ignores (willfully) the fact that higher prices aren't the only problem with tariffs.
And finally, it ignores that anybody who actually did think that prices were going to rise immediately upon all goods as soon as they were enacted is a moron.

this would seem to be you. You were just presented with a whole laundry list of things that are improving in the US and your whole reaction is either
well yeah, but if you were a farmer
well yeah but Trump has nothing to do with that.
etc etc
We're real sorry things are improving across the board and you have Limburger (aka TDS) and have to go around trying to manufacture some reason why the people placed in charge aren't making it better.
Please continue your chicken little ways. A year ago about this time we had "liberation day". The reaction from you chicken little panicans was to be exaclty who you are. Those of us that used that opportunity to make a big play in stocks for the 2-3 days they were tanking send our thanks a year later.
Keep betting against the US (based on your TDS). It's historicallly been a good play on your part.

Like most young ins you sound jealous. Probably want to get used to it. Cause as long as you blame others for your weaknesses, you'll remain weak. Plus the "boomers" aren't complaining that "dey po po pitiful and can't afford no house".

Bring my lunch to work. Don't door dash and don't have any streaming subscriptions. I work with young ins that bring in a crap-a-chino from starbucks every day ( and they likely buy them on the weekend). 300 days of $8 coffees and $20 lunches is $8400. Add to that door dash and various streaming subscriptions, you're over 10K a year. 10K that could be used for purchasing a home.

In 10 or 15 years, when you figure out that you don't know it all
some people don't ever figure this or the next point you made out.
Usually the same people whining about how the point they find themselves in life is somehow unique and the reason they can't accomplish what they want (well yeah but home's used to be affordable for a 23 year old out of college (which was never true) and now they're not!!!!)

Twenty-somethings today live massively different lives than we did. Ask Gen X parents with kids this age. Social media has ruined this generation in terms of what people NEED to live.
And yes, we had restaurants. What we didn't do is eat restaurant food 24/7, and we certainly didn't Door Dash every bite.

"You shouldn't talk about things you know nothing about."
I expect whackadunce wouldn't have much to say then.......
whackadunce much prefers us to talk about how inflation is transitory and will be going down quickly if we just focus on our Snicker shrinkflation and junk fees.
Or to talk about how the border is secure as 5k people a day walk across it unscathed.
You know, whackadunce likes those good honest positions taken by those in charge.

There's no way. I work in a young office in tech/marketing with ~30 people where the average age is about 28 and no-one older than 40s, and I might see 2-3 starbucks cups a day at most. Overwhelming majority use the coffee machine, bring in lunches to put in the fridge, or head home for lunch. I know because I help manage the coffee supply and maintenance of the machine. Nicest car in the lot belongs to the owner, which is a $45k car that's a few years old, and most of the rest are cheaper makes and/or older cars.
I'm in my early 30s and also one of only a handful that own a home and aren't renting.

I own house, at least a significantly paid off mortgage. Cleaned up my spending. Rarely eat out. Cook. From experience, younger people I’ve worked with ate out significantly less than olds.
That doesn’t delude me into thinking that people younger than me aren’t fricked.
I fell arse backwards into a good career. The jobs that I was offered are not being offered to kids in their 20s.
There is a shot clock on wanting to start a family without IVF. It’s much harder for people in their 20s to be ready for that. The problem with what Trump is saying is that he is ok with that

Go check out the housing costs as a percentage of income for Americans in the 80s vs today. Go check out the median home value vs the annual income in the 80s vs today.
Then come back and tell me 20 year olds are just being whiny.
I’ll use myself as an example. I’m in my early 30s. I went to college and law school (and so did my wife) and neither of us have any student debt. We lived on sub poverty threshold income in northern Virginia (one of the most expensive areas in the U.S.) and didn’t take out any debt.
We don’t have any car notes, we cook rather than eat out, no exorbitant purchases, we save money at a rate way higher than normal Americans. And yet we still can’t afford a house. We’re years away. I’m not going to say what my income is, but it’s much higher than the U.S. median.
All that to say, I’ve done everything right, and in terms of finally owning my own home, I’m still way behind where my parents were at the same age.
I’m not trying to say boomers are evil—but it’s just wrong to say millennials/ Gen Z is lazy and spoiled and that’s why they can’t afford a home. The housing market in this country is broken.

I notice you’re not actually refuting anything, or making any sort of argument that this idea (driving up housing prices even more) helps the GOP win elections and America in general. You’re just saying “too bad” which is fine, just be honest about it
