The idea that diversity is our strength as a nation is not new. I am 50 years old and have heard the idea of the American "melting pot" as long as I can remember. Now there seems to be a lot of sentiment going the other way. That diversity is our downfall as a nation and that we should strive to be more homogeneous.

With that in mind I would ask for your answers and opinions on the following questions:

1) Is diversity a strength or weakness for the U.S.?

2) Has the answer to that question always been the same or has it changed over time?

3) Are certain types of diversity ok? What types are destructive? Racial? Ethnic? Religious? Sexual Orientation?

4) If you believe that it is destructive, what steps would you back to counteract it outside of stopping illegal immigration?

False.

It is neither a strength or a weakness. It merely exists or it doesn’t.

There is little international evidence that culturally diverse or racially diverse nations are stronger than homogenous nations.

So nothing should be done to encourage or discourage it?

Unity is a strength.

Diversity can be a strength if there is unity in the diversity, a la the Melting Pot concept of America.

Diversity for diversity sake doesn't do much for me. It's when we all pull together that we succeed.

Strength makes one stronger, not diversity.

Pursuing high achievement makes us stronger, not diversity.

Diversity of thought should be pursued, however.

Diversity of what?

Cognitively deficient, unassimilable people are a negative. Hard working, industrious people that can behave in a civil society can be a positive.

This!

Diversity just for the sake of it is definitely a negative.

The answer has changed because the people that are coming to America are not assimilating, and have no desire to.

Is Philadelphia becoming little Mogadishu a positive?

Race doesn't matter if racial, ethnic, or religious animosity does not come with it.

Sexual orientation doesn't even belong in the discussion unless the animosity comes with it.

The melting pot illustrates melting, together, in a pot. Dems want something more like a charcuterie plate...share a plate but don't touch.

Diversity is awesome when, in the end, we share a common goal. Diversity is bad if you're here but loyalties lie with Mexico or China. 1st wave immigrants came from crap and were hell bent on being "Americans". Italians not letting their kids speak Italian at home for example. A collection of cultures with no common beliefs or shared values lead to trouble, and has throughout human history.

Destructive diversity isn't defined by race, ethnicity, etc. Destructive diversity can be any race, ethnicity, etc. as can diversity that strengthens us. Diversity is negative when folks come here who don't give two shites about being American....especially if they are anti-american. Our current bent of going out of our way to encourage folks to not assimilate is not sustainable.

Stop illegal immigration and only allow in folks who want to be American. That would fix everything.

Our current issue is there is no longer a melting pot. When the dream of America was shared by people from every background then we were strong due to a shared belief system and mutual ideals.
Now we have a salad bowl, where everyone’s background overcomes any shared values and no one becomes an American, they are at best hyphenated Americans but mostly still identify as the crap hole country they left. Plus, most of the world hates us for being successful so they bring that hate where it was once a love of the American ideals.

This is a google drive link to Robert Putnams 2007 study.
LINK

He deserves praise for publishing it, one because it’s interesting and pertinent, but more importantly, because the data made him uncomfortable.

The more diverse a community, the less trusting it is.

People “bunker down” his words. So you see less community involvement, and people are much less invested in each other. Individuals have fewer friends and are generally less happy. These communities aren’t as healthy as their more homogeneous peers.

Diversity will work for America if the vast majority of Americans believe in Americanism. If immigrants come to this country and show little interest in embracing the American culture then there’s going to be issues....see Omar and Tlaib.

False. If nothing else, minorities are killing this country by voting for left-wing loons. If America was still 85% white, we would have a great, conservative country that would be allowing Trump to enact his agenda. The land of "America First" would be thriving.

Sorry if the truth hurts.

In some ways it’s a strength, in some ways it’s a weakness.
