But was he aware they were federal agents and started shooting at them or did men with guns bust into his house to serve a no knock warrant and he thought he was being robbed

Again, from the OT thread, local reports per that poster are that he shot the first LEO and the 2nd returned fire.
This does not appear to be a Breonna Taylor situation

why not have undercover agents just walk up to him at work and make an arrest. why go to his home where he is barracaded and armed and force a shootout.

Kicking someone's door down in the wee hours of the morning virtually assures that you are going to take fire. The important fact is whether they announced themselves, or whether this was a no knock warrant. The fact that he shot an agent, and was then shot pretty much assures that the door was open. So did the guy open the door and start shooting, or was his door kicked in in the middle of the night?
